Tankmates For Betta In 5 Gallon

wouldnt hurt them at all. They do like to borrow so sand is "better" but they will still squeeze between the gravel. I love snails!!! they serve an important purpose and can be as interesting to watch as the fish! cheers

    Aquarium Nightmares....

Anubias is a great choice. Also elodea is another great choice (and cheap to boot!). Does well in low-mod lighting and bettas really like the stuff (from my experience anyway). cheers

    Betta Flaring

Ive had a few lazies that wouldnt flare for anything. I wouldnt worry too much about it unless his behavior is otherwise questionable. cheers

Help! I Think My Betta Is Ill!

The fish looks to be in GREAT condition, especially given your description of his behavior. It is common for bettas to "change" color or "grow into" their color. Red being the most common as it is the dominant gene. Thanks for sharing the photos. Hes lovely! cheers

    Bubble Filter

They do make 25 watt preset heaters at Walmart or similar store. They are small and do a great job keeping the temp stable. Ive never had a problem with any of the dozen or so ive had. just a suggestion. Better to look into that than use a lamp and risk frying the fish. cheers

Which Tank Would Be More Suitable?

Reading the reviews on the 2 products I personally would opt for the second option. Not only is it slightly larger but the filtration seems better. The reviews on the first one state there is no filter guard. You would have to make one or risk your bettas tail getting tattered. Also there were a...

Tankmates For Betta In 5 Gallon

Shrimp are a good choice but make sure there are lots of plants and hiding places. They add very little to the bioload of the tank but are very sensitive to even slight spikes of ammonia, which is why many dont last too long in small tanks which are more subject to swings in water chemistry...

    New Betta! :d

why not just break the pellets up a bit? Smash em up a little before you feed him. His fins dont look too badly. With clean water, less stress and good food he will heal in no time. Feed a few extra bloodworms/ week. Id certainly give longer than a week before you start with any sort of...

    Little Worms?

If they suddenly appeared with the introduction of new plants they are probably tubifex worms (very thin and reddish and live in the substrate) Fish LOVE to eat them. They should diminish with the fish eating them and also dont over feed and give good gravel vacs/substrate cleans with each...

    Can I Risk It?

you basically just "cloned" your mature filter. There was enough bacteria to handle to bioload of the single betta. Test once a day for a week and if stats still good, you can just do once a week testing and say, 30% waterchanges accordingly. cheers!

    My Red Betta

difficult to say without a photo but he may have been getting his fins nipped. with separation and clean water his fins should heal on their own. cheers

    Female Or Young Male?

need a better pic of the fish not resting on the bottom and not so "head on"...ive had a few females who regularly built nests. And they were VT so easy to identify the sex. cheers

    Bubble Filter

I keep bettas in 1gal tanks with home made sponge filters (air driven) and heaters (small ones-25 watt you can purchase at Walmart or similar store). Make sure you cycle the filter first or do water changes everyday until stats stabilize. My bettas do not die a premature death or suffer in any...

Help! Sick Betta! Not Sure Whats Wrong With Fins?

I recommend 30% waterchanges everyday for a week. No meds in this time. Make sure you are doing gravel vacs with each change. Do not overfeed. Dont use salt if you have any scaless tankmates such as cories otos or loaches. Dose the salt at one tablespoon per 10 gal to start. Be careful with your...

    What Is This?

all of the above symptoms sound like internal parasites minus the white spots and fuzz around the mouth which could be from secondary infection. cheers

    Chai's Finrot.

if things are improving i would not recommend continueing meds. Only start redosing meds if you see backward progress. Meds are not only hard on the fish and their organs, but also asking for bacterial mutations-and that would be very bad in your instance (or anyone's instance) as you cannot...

    Breeding My Otos

to me the oto in question just looks like a well fed oto. Round pot belly. When they are gravid you can actually see the eggs beneath the skin and to the rear of the "belly". They will be rather large (for such a small fish) and yellow-ish in color. she might "egg up" eventually, especially if...

    Sick Betta, Please Help..

he looks in a state doesnt he. It is one of two things. Either he is bloated from overfeeding or may have dropsy. Here is what I recommend: Feed a cooked, deshelled pea mushed up into little pieces (that is if he is still eating). Then fast the fish, no feeding, for three days. as for salt...

    Opinions On Aqua Bid.com

Sorry, dont remember the names of the seller-was nearly 2 years ago. There should be a "feedback" section next to the seller's name if im not mistaken. You can click on it and read reviews of stock/transactions for each seller. Might be helpful for you. cheers

    What Is This?

Dragonfly and damselfly nymphs have 3 "tails". mayflies have 2 and stoneflies dont have any noticeable tail-like appendages. only harmful to very very tiny fry. Bigger fish may eat it. cheers

    Opinions On Aqua Bid.com

agreed it depends on the seller. I have bought some cherry shrimp and some plants in 2 separate transactions and was more than pleased with both sellers. Not saying all sellers are terrific but i would use Aquabid again. cheers

    How Much To Feed

i generally only feed around a quarter of the pea. A similar amount to 3-4 pellets.

    How Much To Feed

5 pellets 3X a day is 15 pellets a day! that is tooooo much. their stomachs are only as big as their eye and they have short digestive tracts. That will certainly cause problems in the long run. I would recommend 3 pellets a day and no more. They will always beg like they are starving-its what...

    Otos Help Algae

maybe a better solution to your algae problem then getting some livestock as a short term solution would be to increase flow around the tank (but a powerhead maybe so you dont have dead spots) and look at the photo period of the tank. In all likelihood adding more fish (especially poo machines...

    Finrot

What does the package say as far as dosing? Is it a treatment you redose every, say, 3-4 days? Everyday? THAT is important to consider if you want to do waterchanges while treating. I do not recommend changing water during treatment and redosing appropriate amount back into the tank. Leaves too...

    Helpppp

Firstly, NO aquarium salt in the tank with the cories! they are sensitive to salt. when did the gasping start. Before the melafix or since the addition of? I dont believe in using melafix as clean water has the same outcome and i have had horrible experiences with the stuff, particularly with...

    My Poorly Bettas :(

With so many fish affected i would not go the "natural" route. Im all about using meds ONLY when necessary. I think this is one of those cases. Try aquarium salt first, see it that helps. Give it a few days. Just be careful redosing with waterchanges. You dont want to keep redosing for the...

    Oto Advice Needed...

Otos dont eat ALL types of green algae. As mentioned by one of the other posters if it is green spot algae on the glass (which is where it normally grows) they wont touch it. They eat soft filimentous green algea. Probably why they enjoy hanging on the rocks, which often grows this type. Try...

    Shrimp Massacre

I imagine stirring up the substrate caused a small ammonia spike which killed the shrimp. They are fairly sensitive. Either that or you maybe had chemicals on your hands (soap, lotions etc). also worth mentioning, many times plants are treated in copper solution to kill off snails/snail eggs or...

    My Poorly Bettas :(

how awful! Some questions: Aside from the paling, clamping and lethargy, any other symptoms? Have you noticed flicking or rubbing (even in other fish that dont seem affected yet)? Spitting out food? Hiding? Stringy white or mucousy poo? It definately is not Ich or columnaris. Im leaning toward...

Swim Bladder / Pea Diet Question

It is likely from the netting of the fish. Injury is often a cause of swimbladder disorders. Most times they heal themselves. The pea trick only works if constipation/overeating is to blame as it clears the intestinal tract which allows for the gas exchange to get the SB back into balance. With...

    Male On Side

what do you feed him and how often? does it look like he has trouble with his balance? If so Id treat for swimbladder. Bottom laying isnt abnormal per say, but being horizontal at the surface is not normal. The bubbles could be gas from his swimbladder. i would resist feeding for a day or two in...

Can't Believe What My New Boy Did...and Survived It!

other than the stress of his "adventure", the meds might be making him a bit lethargic on top of it. So hopefully when the round is up and you do a nice BIG waterchange, he will be back to his old self. Im sure he will be fine tho. Id keep the lights off and traffic around the tank to a minimum...

New Betta- Fins Arent Looking So Good

the red looks like normal coloration. as far as his fins, you certain they havent been sucked into the filter. That looks like filter damage to me or tailbiting, and not finrot. Keep water clean. I would not raise the temp any more as will make bacteria multiply faster and might casue secondary...
