Here's a vid of "Beef", my 11" male midas cichlid (I'm now pretty sure he's a midas and not a red devil).
He's pretty mellow most of the time, although is defo developing a territorial streak and will charge and be a glassbanger at times if you get too near without his permission ! Also at other times he is a complete coward and will hide under some plastic plants in the tank. A real character !!
He's now eating pellets as well as his favoured frozen prawns and mussels (thank goodness). All is going well, and I've only had him 6 days so far. He's also an engineer at heart, and loves getting involved in major earthworks. He certainly loves his digging !

Can you stick your finger in the tank next time

He is just gorgous

At the moment I can put my hands in the tank with no worries. I suspect that may change in a couple of weeks, as he gains in confidence and territoriality ! I have my shoulder length waterproof gloves all ready !

He's certainly a looker. I can't imagine your flat substrate will be flat for long :p

lol true verminator. i remember ages ago my lfshad 1 in that a customer couldnt look after. it heaped all the gravel up in a big pile at 1 end of its tank and would sit behind it as if it was lurking waiting for a victim

LOL, i was very tempted before to get one as a center fish for my 60, but i thought it was too big,

Anyway, so your not sure if its a midas? it looks alittle reddevil to me instead, you can tell by the lips, if there thin then its a redevil,if there thick lips then its a midas

Other way around actually. The clue's in the RD's latin name (A.labiatus).

The thinner lips and body shape generally say "midas" to me. However, according to another well known "monster" fish forum, he almost certainly has blood from both midas and red devil lines in him. Apparently, within the hobby, the bloodlines are so intermixed, it's very difficult to get a genuine pure-bred midas or red devil as they have been so interbred over the years.
Whatever he is, he's a lovely chap to have around !

how big of a tank u have him in right now?

It's a 5x2x2' A good size for him it seems. Would certainly cope with a bit of growth from him too, as these can get to about 14" at the limit from all accounts.

He's certainly so much happier with me than he was in the reservoir tank at the MA I bought him from. He was with a dozen or so 4-5" other red devils and he was not happy at all. Just hid in a corner all the time. You'd think he would be the boss and just bully them all but it wasn't like that at all. I think he has been used to being a single fish on his own, so it was a bit of a shock to the system to be put with a load of others at the LFS.
