What's new

Weather

One minute it is bright as day and the next it is as dark as night. I suppose soon we will hear the booms and thunder-clap as it goes from dry to wet.

starting an “it’s so hot” portion of this thread… it’s so hot out there right now, i just started the tractor “cold” and the temp gage says it’s at normal operating temperature…
It's so hot the BBQ lit itself. ;)

Do you have any problems with bears by you?
Bears are a big sore spot with me.. Now and then we will have a black bear come down from the mountains and people freak due to a lack of knowledge. For a black bear to attack you would involve you becoming a threat. Just leave the beast alone and it will leave you alone.

It really ticks me off that, if a bear comes into human areas, it will be tagged and released back in the mountains. If it comes back again it is killed. I say to just lift the thing to Yellowstone and release. Many believe that such a release would just result in the thing being killed by resident black bears but this isn't true. Black bears are different than brown or grisly. Blacks are actually VERY social and will adopt a young bear as part of their society including even nursing a stranded cub.

Bears and sharks which as wacky as this sounds have seen sharks in freshwater canals when used to go looking for snakes are a big fear for me.

I would like your area due to the nature but bears would make me nervous though hear what you are saying.

What @jaylach said . Nervous Nellie’s freak out if they see a bear and it’s always the poor bear that gets the dirty end of the stick . Especially infuriating is that it’s always transplants from elsewhere that cause these problems . I root for the bears !

I knew a bear once. Sadly he bit my head off so now i no longer know him.

Just a bit of useless info. ;) Grizzly and Kodiak bears are actually sub species of brown bears. Black bears are a totally different species... well sort of. Millions of years ago blacks diverged from the brown cousins and went a different path. Brown, Grizzly, Kodiak and even Polar bears are very territorial while blacks are not.

The following is mostly speculation without much in-depth research.

Let's stay in North America for this and think just Black, Brown, Grizzly and Kodiak bears. All, except the blacks, are quite territorial while blacks are quite social. So, since they are actually all in the same genetic family, why the difference? Personally I think that size is a factor. Blacks are the smallest of the group. I think that blacks became social as a survival method. Put a black against any of the others and it doesn't stand a chance. A brown can reach 1400 pounds while the max size of a black is around 500 pounds. One black against a brown would never have a chance but what if there were 10 blacks against the same brown? The blacks may take some losses but the brown is history when all is said and done. I think that this is a major factor as to why blacks became social. Then there is the social depth where a black will 'adopt' a cub while the others won't. I think this is due to the blacks needing to keep a larger population to fight off their larger cousins.
