I went to The Grand Tetons National Park, Targhee National Forest and Yellowstone National Park and while I was at Yellowstone, I got interested in the stuff growing in the runoff from the geysers. I was hoping there would be some little fish in there, but I don't think there are. There are, however, interesting other stuff (click on these to see much larger images):
Where they come from:

This is one of the pools that are part of the Black Sand Basin in Yellowstone National Park. There are lots of different geological features, but lazily I just say "geysers."

Ephydrid Flies (Brine Flies)
I was caught by the pink color of what turned out to be eggs. It looked to me like rotting meat LOL- I didn't even see the flies until I zoomed in and started filming.

Streamers
These are bacteria that produce carotenoids to protect from sunlight- thus the orangey-yellow color. First picture is close to 0 zoom, subsequent photos are (if I remember right) from 30x - 50x. To me the zoomed ones look like art.

Different one (not sure what it is):
This one is different than the streamers- it looks like a plant to me. Very pretty close up:

More Streamers
These have more of a green hue. First couple of photos are less zoomed

Yellowstone is great ! I hope you enjoyed your trip and saw a lot of stuff . The water from those hot pools and geysers is loaded to the hilt with minerals and rock hard in addition to being scalding hot . Not sure but I think some of the colors in the water are various forms of algae . This makes me think of Pupfish . Perhaps one of our esteemed TFF members is knowledgeable about them . Isn’t the Devil’s Hole Pupfish and some others native to hot water ? Maybe I’m thinking wrong .
Do any climbing while you were in The Teton’s ?

Had a great time! No climbing- just a lot of scrambling around to see the sites. Only had a few days for everything

Sorry for the hijack, but I met Neal Peart in Yellowstone at the Old Faithful Inn. He was getting off his bike when I pulled up on mine, and, bikers being bikers, we had to ogle each other's machines. Had a coffee with him and chatted about his trip for a while, he was very gracious considering the grief he was experiencing. Turned my great trip into an AMAZING one.

Out of curiosity what were the crowds like when you were up there? I haven't been in a few years because the last time I went it was waaaay too crowded.
