Breeding Nets

In my experience, the one in the trap seems to be more stressed because she can still see the other fish and the tank outside. She then feels trapped because she can't get to them. I feel these traps should be made bigger for those people that want to use them, and in a solid colour so the fish on either side of it can't see the other.
If you do feel the need to use a trap, then please buy the biggest one you can find. :good:

Well I went ahead and took her out of the net. She was too stressed and the other fish kept getting caught between the glass and the net. After a couple of fish was stuck to the glass in between the net and glass, I gave up. I figured I would lose some of the other fish too, if I didn't. So I wonder how am I going to keep the other fish from getting stuck, when I put the net back in for the fry?
Thanks for all the help! :D

When you put the net in you have to bend the hangers so that the net fits completely against the glass so they can't get behind it. You have to make a few more small bends to do it, but it works great for me.

Just a note... My mom isn't usually the one that's mean. The others try eating the fry before they are out good. They end up biting the mom and messing her under side up quite badly sometimes. Because of this I feel that sometimes the net is less stress.
I don't use a divider because I can't find one that the fry can't swim through and get eaten. Also it seems that they would be just as stressed. It is still putting them in a small space, and they can still see the other fish without being able to get to them. It could be a better option, but I just don't see how. The one I had was really hard to get in and out. I had to almost break down the tank to get it in right. I didn't have a clue what I was doing either. That may have had something to do with it though. lol :hyper:

The appetite of the mother giving birth is normally supressed a couple of hours after birthing. This gives the fry a fighting chance by basically neutralizing the threat from the closest fish. Unfortunately, in tanks there is no place to really run away from other fish that may be looking for an easy meal.
