What are some aquatic creatures that are not fish but can be housed in a freshwater aquarium?

Snails and freshwater shrimps; frogs and crabs can be, but it's not normally a good idea to keep them with fish in the same tank.

Back to the OP - - were you looking to set up an aquarium-type tank but for other aquatic inhabitants, or add them to your pre-existing tanks WITH fish?

Ah ok - - now that is what I was hoping for!

I am very partial to ACF - - African Clawed Frogs. Get to be a decent size so a decent size tank is required and come in a variety of interesting colors (I have a website where I put a bunch of the available colors it - let me know and I can PM the link so you can see the variety) - - Natural brown/green spotted, albino, reticulated albino, leucistic, and piebald (very very rare and usually a pretty penny to buy!

There is also their smaller "cousin" the ADF - - African Dwarf Frog. Cannot be housed with the ACF because an adult ACF can easily eat an adult ADF...but they are cute little buggers as well.

ACF can reach up to 5 inches...ADF up to 2 inches
ACF can live 10-15 years with 20 not unheard of....ADF average 3-5

ACFs are great pets if you keep them on their own. Axolotls are awesome too .

ADFs could be kept with shrimp, snails and fish though if you wanted more variety.

I have always been partial to Eastern Newts. But you do need to keep them in a terrarium after they morph into the land form. In the aquatic forms I have had success keeping them in mixed community tanks with small/medium (not tiny) docile fish.

Crayfish are fun. though best kept on their own, but watching one arrange its tank, is great fun.
redclaw crabs are great stock. but need a tank 3/2 land 1/3 brackish water as well as heat lamps. this makes them unsuitable for community life.
ADF's work ok in communities (stocking dependent) but will do better on their own, in a shallow(er) tank.
ACf should only be kept on their own. for this reason, i find them boring.
Axolots are fantastic playful stock. again only for a species tank
Fiddler crabs, much the same as redclaw crabs,
Rainbow crabs are a fresh water crab. needing a tank of the same ssetup as for "redclaw". but again in a tank on its own. they are very aggressive.
Clams are to be avoided. unless you are prepared to give them a green water tank. the environment makes the tank a terrible display.

Vampire shrimp are a large filter shrimp (3-6 inches). they are shy, and can work in a planted community (stocking dependent)
wood shrimp, another filter feeder, i find, work well in a community (stocking dependent).
most other shrimps work, to an extent, in communities. the exception being some long arm shrimp. theses can grow to massive size. and eat everything they see.

I've read about freshwater clams, but I heard they only live for around 3 months. Big ammonia spike when they die and because they bury themselves under the substrate it can be a recipe for disaster - you won't know about it until your whole tank dies
