A very worthy rant ! Capitalism exploiting nature . Parakeets , guinea pigs and chameleons worldwide are lining up to have the bourgeoisie sentence them to a slow painful demise of malnutrition , disease and loneliness .
BUT . . . . My rant has to do with that word “ fam “ . I hate overused words , you know , like , I mean , well you know . Reach out to me and my kiddos .

Look at the bright side; if they are family maybe they will be treated better ? After all would you treat your pet lizard who is a family member as bad as your dog who isn't ?

“ Fam “ instead of the fully vocalized word “ Family “ . I first heard this one overused about a year or so ago and now everybody , especially younger women , use it . “ Kiddos “ instead of kids is another fingernails on the chalkboard to me . Remember John Belushi in Animal House and what he did to that goofy troubadours guitar ? That’s what I want to do to these imitators of goof-speak . In a world of individualists everybody wants to sound the same and look the same . It has always been thus . I had a crew cut in my early high school years and when The Old Man relented and let me grow it out I did so to fit in . Where does that kind of indoctrination come from ? Same with wearing clothes with corporate insignias and cutesy sayings on them . I’m not a billboard ! Nobody pays me to advertise for them . Nobody gets a royalty if I wear a “ Have A Nice Day “ shirt . I wish for a time when we can go back to traditional garb and precise speech . You want to look and sound like everybody else ? I don’t !
Now let’s get into it about dogs . Ever since my unfortunate encounter last summer I HATE them ! I hate their drooling slobber and their crapping everywhere and people having to walk them in public and the public paying for dog parks . Most of all I hate their barking . Barking dogs turned into attacking and biting dogs in my case .

that one doesn't bother me - language is always changing and grandparents always criticize their grandkids new way of expressing things though i suppose if you go far enough back in time they would just cut the kid tongue out if they spoke weird words...

As for dogs - yea i'm not a fan of the slobbering among other things - and i suppose that works into the equation of my being a cat person though in truth cats have always had more interesting personalities in my opinion with greater diversity.

Language does indeed change and never for the better . I had an Uncle who was a schoolteacher and he insisted on correct grammar and clear wording . I didn’t appreciate that when I was younger but I do now . In another twenty years. , if I live that long , I won’t understand anyone . My hearing is all but gone and I don’t hear much so that will certainly make my prophecy come to pass .
My biggest gripe is here on The Great TFF Forum . Everyone has a “ tank “ . I have aquariums . A tank is something you put gasoline in or a vehicle that drives around killing people . Too bad I had to mention that because now the barrage of silly memes defending tank will be posted .

This reminds me of a moment a couple of years ago, I went to the grocery store to buy food for dinner. I picked up a bunch of red beets. They were sold at X$ per pound. But they still had all the green tops on them. I ripped them off and left them in the produce section. Why would I pay for the tops?

I have fishtanks. It's the same thing as an aquarium. Language is in constant movement. Our vocabularies are becoming impoverished compared to past generations, if we so choose. I love the arrival of new words though. There's a lot of creativity at work.

I'm a slang and street language person. When I wrote a lot of fiction, I wrote in the language of my neighbourhood, to make a point. My friends and I were called low class, which was the point. We were. When I taught English, I spoke at a different register, because that was the job.

I learned working class street French, and when I had to I learned more standard European forms. We adapt. I only speak 2 languages, which is a shame (on me), but I can speak each at a few levels, as we all do. I could have learned Spanish, Italian and other languages. They were around me. That's where you really end up with a language problem - when you only speak one or two.

If a slang word comes in - first at my age I look like an idiot if I use it, and second, if I don't like it I don't use it. I used to cringe when I heard 50 year old teachers trying to sound like 15 year olds. That's stupid. But 15 year olds who sound like 15 year olds? Reasonable.

That ad this thread starts with goes against a lot I hold dear. Many ads do...

This!!! It's about as succinct a commentary on the human need to be socially acceptable as there is. Get on the bandwagon!
