I used to have a crayfish (before they were illegal over here) and he was brilliant, I loved him. My kids named him 'Shelly', lol; I was gutted when he died

Every little stream around here is loaded with Red Crayfish. They are not native. I suppose that's why they're illegal there.

I've read about freshwater clams, but I heard they only live for around 3 months. Big ammonia spike when they die and because they bury themselves under the substrate it can be a recipe for disaster - you won't know about it until your whole tank dies

actually clams live as long, if not longer than the average fish. it the keepers who kill them.
lol, starving/dying calms lay on top of the substrate. only healthy clams bury themselves.

but, broadly your comment fit with those of who tried to keep them.
as i pointed out, they need a green water species tank. in one of those they, could, live for 50 years.
they are not hobby stock. because of ignorant keepers.
