We’re now expecting 18 to 24 inches of heavy wet snow with 50 to 60 mph wind gusts. That will cause some drifting of snow. At the height of the storm, it could snow at a rate of 2 to 4 inches an hour. The plows won’t be able to keep up with that rate.
Here is a pic of my backyard before the storm hits later today. We have quite a bit of snow on the ground from previous snow storms.
I will post updated pics as the storm hits and the snow piles up.

STATE OF EMERGENCY just declared in NYC due to blizzard. This includes a travel ban on all non-essential vehicles on all streets, roadways, highways, bridges and tunnels in the five boroughs. Except for 4 years of college, I've lived here all my life and cannot recall this happening before except 9/11.

@GaryE I learned the difference between snow throwers & blowers in MA several years ago. Throwers have rotating blades that actually move the snow several (6-10) feet out of the way. Snow blowers tend to be smaller & less effective in deep snow. They often just "blow" the snow back into your face & don't do as much toward clearing a path in 1 pass. I used to call them all blowers until we bought 1. According to my BIL there are something like "powered snow shovels" that are all the rage in his Michigan neighborhood, at least among the older folks. Sounds like "blowers" to me but I haven't seen them. I could be wrong...

Along with the blizzard, there are expected to be many power outages. I pray I dont lose power as I don't have a generator and the temps monday night will be 9 degrees F.

I have a two stage gas engine powered snow blower which is good for clearing deep snow. I also have a single stage engine powered snow thrower. It’s great on walkways and decks for up to about 10 inches of snow. It doesnt throw the snow as far or as high as my snow blower.
And I also have a cordless battery powered snow shovel which is great for nuisance storms up to 4 or 5 inches of light to medium density snow. It’s not so good on wet snow. It throws snow up to 16 feet. Great for walkways and decks.

Nah, in eastern Canadian usage, even the large vehicles that do roads are snow blowers. Snow throwers may well be different machines, as there are different technologies, but language wise, they don't exist in my region. I imagine our American friends labouriously pushing catapults up their driveways, filling and launching endlessly.

It's due here in a few hours. How is it behaving as a storm?

It was supposed to stall a bit south and really wallop NYC, but up here it's getting pulled out to sea much more quickly. It's still going to be a mix of wind and heavy snow, so it should be a mess.

If it's that heavy dense snow Spring storms often are, shovel slowly and carefully. That's heart attack snow. Take breaks to admire the fish.

Well, this one is a doozy. A relentless blizzard. Last night we had thunder snow, which was...eerie. 19" officially on the ground as of two hours ago and it's still coming down hard and being driven by fierce winds.

I can see the line of this storm creeping across the bay. It's a wall of grey. The winds are here already, and have been for hours. This was the day we had to use a ladder to fix a vent, and it wasn't the perfect one for it. Job done, everyone survived. No one was hit by the seagulls, which are weaving out of control out there. They may be having fun.

I felt like someone should be singing sea shanties when I was up there.

Interestingly, after I started typing I saw the radar, and the line of the storm shows there too. And just this moment, the gods each threw a shovel of snow into a fan. We're off and running.

I like a good storm if everyone stays safe. We have a local potato chip company that sells 'storm chips', and word is this'll be a two bag storm.

We got about 16 inches so far with more to come over the next several hours. Down toward the cape, there are widespread power outages. Luckily, my power is still on so far.
Temperature will drop to 9 degrees tonight.
We could get a couple inches of snow on wednesday and there is a bigger storm on thursday night into friday but they say it may be a mix of rain and snow due to warming temperatures toward the end of the week.
What a mess!
