Weather

I notice the crows are interested in the car today.
Take a wild guess why .
Still weird here in Sheridan WY, A week into November yet we have yet to have any snow even at night. Normally we tend to get night time snow even in later September. The 10-day forecast still calls for no snow; a couple of days in the mid to upper 40's then back in the 50's and 60's. Actually this is fine with me as long as we get the needed snow in the mountains it can rain here instead. ;)

Sigh, yet SO many people still believer that global warming does not exist. :dunno:
Same up here on the banks of the mighty Yellowstone River . No snow and little rain but plenty of wind . But . . . . . it will change . Yes , change it will and then the cold and ice hang on forever .

Today we have a yellow alert for snow and ice. We got up this morning to dry roads, but grey skies. Around 9 am it started to snow - for half an hour. We had 1 cm (1/2 inch) snow then it stopped and the sun came out. Most of the snow has now melted. The forecast for this afternoon is rain. That will end up as ice as the temperature won't get much above freezing point so I can understand the ice warning, but why the snow warning for 1 cm?

We had a tiny snowfall last week - maybe 5 to 10cm. It's 95% melted now, and we're sitting at seasonal temps around 0 celsius. The deciduous trees are all bare now and my view out from my window is of a scarlet sky and a deep blue sea.
Yesterday, I harvested all the "botanicals" off my young 8 foot oak tree.

Okay. This has been lovely. Where's summer?

Only 5 months to go.

An alert for yellow snow???

Don't eat the yellow snow :)

At least we weren't in the amber alert area; that was a few miles south over the North York Moors and there were photos of all the cars stuck in snowdrifts in the local media.

Our snow from November 28th had all melted and dried up , the roads were clear and life was good . Yesterday I went for a run in shorts while it was 62 degrees and an hour after finishing it started raining and then it started snowing a bit after that and then the thermometer dropped cataclysmically . This morning the snow is 6 inches deep over a layer of glazed water ice and it’s 10 degrees . So much for running in shorts for a while .

We have the same snow going on here. 1f F today, 24 F tomorrow and then back to the 50s.
It amazes me that weathermen can predict this stuff which such accuracy . They called this right on the money but one place they do fall down is in their predictions of a warm up . It’s 4 degrees Fahrenheit here right now and they say it’ll get up to 18 today . Ha ! Fat chance I say and they say 22 tomorrow and 48 Sunday . No way that’s going to happen . Once this cold settles in it takes a week for it to move out . I’ve seen it many a time . Also , in my opinion there’s something kind of sinister in the accuracy of their forecasts . It just shouldn’t be possible and I don’t like it .

There's nothing sinister about forecasts here. They never correspond to what we see, since they come from the airport, a few km inland. That's a different zone. We are within sight of the sea, so all bets are off. You can drive 15 minutes inland and they'll get 15-20 cm of snow while we get rain. In summer, we're often ten degrees C cooler, and in winter that much warmer. I have a fishkeeper friend in a city 90 minutes from here and he'll complain it's -25. So I complain it's -5. He still gets mad every time.

We have a heat pump. I tried the AC feature once, and it worked. But we've never really used it. The heat gets its workout. What we do get that I've never experienced as often in any other home is ferocious winds. It seems that when fronts change here, they do it with gusto. It's not just coyotes that howl around here.

We had 30 cm of snow out front last weekend. Now we have frozen brown grass. Yesterday, we were in between, and last night the meltwater all over the roads flash froze. My boots were dog sleds, and Mabel the dog thought she was a full team of huskies when I took her out for a pee. Her dear friends the deer were walking across the road and she momentarily forgot she was trained and wanted to go feral with them. I fit the Canadian stereotype in that I did play hockey and can skate. It's a good thing.

We had the worst windstorm yesterday that this town has ever seen . Sustained winds of 55 to 65 miles per hour gusting to 79 MPH according to the National Weather Service . Very fortunately no damage to the house but many were not so lucky . Power outages all over town from downed lines that they are still fixing . It was scary . At one point I could feel the floor vibrating . We’re above the river and not in any danger of flooding , I’ve seen lots of deep snow and have gone through bone chilling cold snaps so I wondered what kind of severe weather could impact us . Now I know !

Yeah, it was bad here too. Finished the last hour or so of the school day with no electricity.

We've had a weird arrival of warm air - the snow is largely gone and it was a sunny, light jacket day. Usually at this time of year, when it's sunny, it's cold. Right now, after dark, we're a few degrees above freezing.
Tomorrow an equally odd storm is supposed to hit, with torrents of rain and very high wind gusts of up to 110 kmph here along the coast. That's 68 mph in strange countries - fair winds. We often get nor'easters this time of year, but this is predicted to come from the south (hence the warmth).
That's where the hurricanes come from, in season. It's a curious direction for a storm.

Hey, maybe the fish will breed. I may give my concolor corys a shot of cooler water. They've been acting lively this week.
