WalMart blows....

It isn't the corporation that we should fight, at least not if it's really the fish you are worried about, it's the individual store management that allows these conditions to continue due to not training employees and not hiring enough staff to do the cleaning job that needs to be done and not supervising the departments to make sure it is done.
This is where we will just have to disagree. I believe you DO have to fight the company, especially when that company is as evil as WalMart in - and boy are they, through and through.

You're right, you CAN make a difference for fish in an individual store, and that makes a big difference.

In case ANYONE is still confused about this, those of you who are fighting vocally for change, making a real difference - I'm behind you 100%.

jols - Welcome to our forum. :)

I hate that you had to start out posting in this icky, icky topic. We really usually are very nice folks here. Nothing you have said will make anyone on this forum angry or upset with you, I personally guarantee that. ;)

It's FABULOUS that you have your little betta girly in a great 2.5G tank with plants and a cave. She's one spoiled little gal.

The fact that you didn't raise a ruckus in the past is not something anyone would hold against you. And I'm very excited about the fact that you're willing to speak up if conditions aren't great for the fish.

I live in Madison, WI and my boyfriend has family in LaCrosse. Where are you from?

:) Thanks for welcoming me, and I just want to say, I loved/love reading your posts on your betta boys. :*)

I guess the only reason why I posted was from what the one person wrote. Being so new, and stumbling upon this discussion *and I pretty much read all new discussions every day, until I take my licensing exam and get a 'real' job, lol* and I almost didn't write anything...because I WAS chicken! :S

I feel like I have to spoil Fatima, she's the only other fish besides my psycho Eddie that love me enough to be good and stay alive without problems  lol. I should say...so far?

There was one time that I wanted to say something at Walmart. OK, I will be VERY honest. The apartment I'm in is small...and the tank I got that Eddie is in is...5 gallons. -_- :/ :(
Bill didn't know anything about fish...I didn't know anything about goldfish, besides the fact that my mum has 2 in a 2 Gal. tank and they're alive...where mine died...tho I as GROSSLY overstocked. Now I just have Eddie...and sigh...Sea Biskit The Great. Tho, there is hope...Bill is most likely 98% for sure going to join the Navy...he just needs to take his tests...and then, I...*yay* will be moving back home again *sarcastic yay* but I have 2 bedrooms upstairs, and can get a bigger tank. If I did that here...we'd be sleeping out on the steps...:S And there isn't anyone to give them to, no 'local' fish stores for me...and my other friend who could take them, has a 5 gal *so that's a no-go* with 2 very big goldies in there. I'm stuck...*this is another reason I was too afraid to post* :X But I do regular water changes several times a week, keep the gravel clean, etc. I know it's still bad, but I know better to get any more goldfish. :S Now that's out of the way!
There was an oranda at Walmart I felt so bad for. His dorsal fin had been 'eaten?' off. He had a couple lil' bones sticking out and that was it. Since I go there weekly, he had been there almost a MONTH, and the last time I saw him he had a LOT of fungus on that area. I wanted to take him home so bad...but since I don't have any room...literally...I couldn't. And my only 'hospital' tank is a gallon bowl *cringes* I felt awful...and no one would buy a fish like that. The ONE time I saw someone over there...I was too stupid/chicken to say anything...and I really, really wish I had. :X

I'm from Waukon/Postville, Iowa....where I'm at during the day is where I'm from...lol. My parents live about 10 min. away from Waukon, and they have a Postville address. I live here in Waukon pretty much...but am at the parents every day for chores *yes, a farm girl! :D *

I've been to Madison a couple times with my aunt and uncle...I LOVE the Barnes and Nobel there! *droooooool* But it's been several years. I go to Lacrosse a few times a year...mostly clothes shopping...I love shopping. :*)

It was nice to meet you!

:drink: jols - please don't let us scare you off. I think it is great that you are trying to help the fish, and as long as you are doing what you feel you can for them you have nothing to feel stupid or chicken about. We really don't hate each other around here, but we are very passionate about our fish and sometimes I don't think we are aware of the way we are coming across. (Okay a few of us don't care how we come across, but we're still harmless. :look: ) Please give us another chance and let us help you in anyway we can with your fish. :hi:

OK, 7 pages is a lot to read. So I didn't bother. Buuuut... Here's what I think.

Walmart is a massive company. Everywhere has one. Heck, even in the UK ASDA is owned by Walmart. Thank goodness that doesn't do fish.... Anyway. Walmart makes an awfully big profit. I can't remember how much it makes to your dollar, but its a lot. Whether you buy that poor ill betta or not, it will still be replaced next time they get their delivery in. Considering the profit they make, it would take an awfully long time of no one buying any bettas (or indeed, any fish) at all before they noticed. Or cared. Have you read bettamommas sig? You are making the difference between definate death and possible death for that sick betta. Possible death because, lets face it, a lot of rescues are VERY sick. Most pull through, but not all :(. If you rescue it, not only will you have saved a life, you will feel happy. If you believe in karma, you've gained a lot of good stuff. And you also would have gained a happy fishy friend. Whereas if you leave it, the betta will probably die. You will also feel bad. So just rescue it.

jols - my grandma has a big (and I mean BIG - like 6" long) goldfish in a 5 gallon tank. She had him in a 2.5G tank until I donated my unused 5 gallon tank to her out of pity for the fish. She does pretty regular water changes now, since I explained to her that the fish really, really needed it.

I really think that if you are keeping up with the water changes it should be okay that they're in a tank that size until you can do something better for them. Just make sure you keep them up. If, at some point, you have the option to upgrade go for it! - just imagine how happy they'll be then! :)

I love shopping in Madison, too! I'm not sure where postville is, but I grew up 7 miles north of the IA border - on the south side of MN. Closest town was Rock Rapids. I was sort of a farm girl, too. Without any farm animals. lol

After reading this thread I guess I feel a bit on the chicken **** side of things. I guess I've done things the wrong way, and feel bad for that. I see that I can fix that if I voice my opinon the next time I go to the fish section, but I feel bad for my past 'rescues.' now because I didn't use the proper protocal
I thought I was trying to give them a good home...to me, that was rescuing, I can see now in the view point of others' I was wrong.
Wow. If you see that after reading this thread, I have done what I set out to do. You're right, you can make a difference. There is no "proper protocol" - if you don't know what to do or how to fix it, you do the best you can, and take the fish home (as many do), and that's okay.

Now, you know there is another way - a way to make your voice heard. Please don't feel badly about past decisions - you didn't know better, know you do! Just live into that reality on future rescues. Use your voice, I know you will. ;)

Thank you for having an open enough mind to consider the opinions set forth by everyone on this thread. You were able to make an informed decision on how you want to act in the future. I think that's awesome!

If you can't be "bothered" to read the whole thread, I won't be "bothering" to read your posts on the topic. :dunno:

Cation and myself are on opposite ends of the stick on this matter but there's no hard feelings between us.
Perhaps because we realize it's the same stick, and the ends are not that different, nor that far apart. ;)

If it's so icky, BettaMomma, why are you coming back for more?

Then don't. It doesn't bother me if you're going to get narky with everyone. But have you heard of a little thing called the EDIT button....?

Sure have! But considering I was referring to seperate posts with seperate points, it seemed appropriate.

Is that the best shot you can take? Cause it ain't that great. Funny, OhFeeshy, I've always pretty much supported you, shows how quick the water turns.

One good thing about this thread is it's really helping me weed out who I'll even bother being civil to in the future (let alone help). You think this thread is nasty? Some of you are in for a real treat, then. I'm not even close to being in full form. Many of the people with the nastiest things to say about me and the way I am are the same people I have gone out of my way to make feel welcome, or help with problems. What a bunch of ingrates some people are.

Gaya, by the way, good to see you girl! I miss seeing your face around these parts!
