Sand

I am quite interested in using sand as a substrate.

Is there anywhere I can get black sand? Naturaly black, not painted.

I put sand in this week in my new tank, love it so far! only prob is my plants dont seem to be too happily routed Cant wait to let my corry cats go wild on it

the sand is of good quality
but its a bit on the expensive side

That seems to be specialy for marine setups. Will it be ok in a freshwater tank?

yeah it should be fine, I know its not balck but I used to use coral sand in my mbuna set up.

Changed my mind again. I cant realy afford to spend £30ish on sand. So I am thinking of playsand in the bottom with a plain black background.

Yes normal play sand is great and only a few quid at Argos

be aware to realise just how much poo fish produce if you're going from gravel to sand. i have to hoover my tank every other day or else it looks horrific. and considering my lovely sterbais are sifting it through their mouths, it needs to be kept clean. im even considering removing some of my tank decor and plants to ease the poo hoovering excercise. gravel is definitely a lot easier to maintain. but i think sand looks a bazillion times better.
