A couple of weeks ago I discovered my male firemouth was a female? I moved the male elliotti to another tank and put the female in. Now tonight the firemouth is guarding some eggs, some of them are while but most are not, but no other fish is near her. She will not let the blue acara anywhere near the eggs but one of the male serverums is hovering overhead (with a right smug look) surly these two havnt spawned? have they?

Once she calms down a bit I am going to move the firemouth to another tank, she seems to drop her eggs for anyone!

They might think they spawned but I don't doubt a Firemouth and serverum could produce live fry. I think that your Firemouth just like to lay eggs. She is a horny little fish that wants babies. haha. Cichlids are so weird.

I think your right she just wants babies! Checked this morning there is a batch of white eggs, so she must have just laid them by herself (thankfully) Its such a shame though she is desperately trying to fend off the plecs, its almost heartbreaking to watch her guarding her eggs against a 16" plec

aww poor girl. It might be best for you to just remove the eggs your self.
