Guess What I Got Today

Others will probably recoil in horror but I dont remove the courgette, I just leave it to get eaten, they all finish it off eventually within a couple of days. It's easier for the, to eat once it starts breaking down a little.

Have you got the lights on? I would turn them off for the rest of today and maybe tomorrow, just to let everyone settle in properly.

guess what I've just seen ... spots of the white variety on my tuxedo platies & my female guppies ... aww not again...

Oh and my peppered cory just took on the tank bully and chased her round the tank 3 times until she backed down :hyper: it's my two bronze cory's that are stressed the peppered one is fine ... ooh he's off again he's taken real offence to that wag tail platy bully of mine lol.

The lights have been off all day and they lived in the dark for two full days before the move cos the bulb in the 2 footer blew and I refused to pay £13 for a new one! I've just got it on for a bit cos my plants are looking a bit sick. I'll probably just have it on for an hour then back to darkness until tomorrow

update:

All 3 oto's are on the courgette and all 3 cory's are going nuts - as in zooming round the tank, whizzing up to the top and back again ... I think they're over their stress

well I'm up at 2.45am cos I'm in pain and I'm waiting for tablets to kick in. All the fish are either up at the top or layed on the gravel - which of course could suggest there's some ammonia in there. Either that or that's how they sleep ??

The question would be can I still do a water change in the morning if I need to when I've got the white spot meds in or is that going to take the meds out and stop them working?

I don't want any ammonia in there but I don't want them ill with white spot either.

Also, does anyone know how you alter the flow on this filter? Is it something set as standard or can I increase it somehow? I really can't face trawling through a CDRom for the answer if someone here can answer the simple query quickly.

Cheers guys :D

They would've been asleep. Are they active now?

The pump only has one setting.

Test the water, and if there's any amm or nitrite do a water change, if not leave it with the meds in.

morning, they are more actice this morning but there's more noticable spots coming out. One bronze cory has hidden itself away and that platy that's the tank bully is doing quite a bit of hiding too ... I think the peppered cory has given her the telling off she deserves - she steals all the food, often won't let others near even when she's had enough and generally lords it round the tank.
I've just given them a tubiflex block, they've had half of it and I've taken the rest away as they'd lost interest.

The water looks good, ph is stable between 6.8 and 7.0. No ammonia and no nitrite, temp is also stable at 25. The milky looking cloud is clearing too. I dosed with the protozin at about 4pm yesterday so I'll dose again around the same time today and tomorrow and pray I get rid of this white spot outbreak.

Oto's are feeding on the courgette so I know they arn't going hungrey.

I'm hoping I've got away with the move and there will be no more loses but I'll be keeping an eye on the bronze cory that's hiding.

Lights are on until 11am which means they've been on about an hour and a bit - more for the plants than anything else. Then it'll be darkness until tonight. I'll see if the bronze cory comes out when the light goes off.

Anything else I've not considered?

update:

It's looking like I've lost an Oto. I've only seen 2 all day today. I've looked everywhere I can see without disturbing rocks/decorations etc and I can't see him anywhere ... strange.

On a happier note the white spots seem to be fading and they've stopped flicking so I'm hoping I've got the infection under control.

Peppered cory has now asserted him/herself as the boss now. I'm hoping when I can get a couple of friends for him/her that the bossyness might go away again

It's not being bossy, it stems from fear. The minute you add a couple more it'll be a different fish.

The Oto may reappear.
Sometimes I think I've lost one, then from nowhere it just appears.
Glad they liked the courgette after all.
I'm going to try mine on French beans tomorrow

I'm keeping the courgette in for a few days. I replaced it this morning as it was disintegrating and making a mess of the water. They keep going back and forth to it. At least I know that there's something in there for them to eat until the algae gets growing.
It would be nice if the missing Oto reappears .. I don't like the thought that it's died somewhere I can't see.

Can you let me know how the green beans go down. If they like them I might give them a go.

I may try and get this bogwood in this week. It's soaking but there's nothing much coming from it. I think once that goes in all the fish will be happier as they'll have more cover - it's quite a big lump!

That reminds me, I thought I had 4 otos, but when catching all my fish earlier to add more substrate and replant, it turns out I have 6... I lose count! They're easily missed.

I was looking into my tank the other day, & wasn't til one of them moved I saw him right in front if me.
I'll let you know if they like the beans

they are very good at disguising themselves - I'm guessing it's a survival thing from the wild.

I've been checking out my baby platies today and I think they're nearly big enough to join the main tank. Might give them another week and then add them a couple at a time

Those babies are definitely big enough, you dont have anything large enough to eat them now.
