So I want to start culturing moina and/or daphnia. Now from what I understand, the best food for them is green water. So I want to master culturing green water first.
Basic set up is a clear plastic approx 3 gallon jug. This room has an old no longer in use kitchenette that I have taken over for fish stuff. The window is east facing to get more sun on the culture. And I have some plant lights running from 7 AM to 10 PM.
First try. I put a bag of grass clippings and a piece of apple in a mesh bag in the culture. I would give it a stir every few days. (don't mind the fruit fly trap next to it. this is where I work on my fruit fly cultures too.) Anyways, not knowing any better, I created a pretty good infusoria culture but not green water.

Next try. No grass clippings or apple. Just old tank water. I added an air stone to keep the water moving. I also dosed liquid ferts.

As you can see, algae developed on the sides and I was getting clumps of it in the water, but not phytoplankton.
Ok so I'm trying again. Dumped out this last culture and disinfected it. I'll fill it with fresh water. Only this time I have a phytoplankton sample on order. So I'll seed it with that.
