Guess What I Got Today

forgot to mention I also got an extention lead with surge protection too!.

Right-t-o ... Questions now lol

1. I have to soak the bog wood right? Is there a special way to do it or is it just a case of dumping it in a bucket of water and leaving it for a couple of weeks? (that's what it tells me to do on the label but this p@h we're dealing with!)

2. What's the best way to attach the background to the back of the tank? I used doube sided tape on the 2ft but water dripped down the back of the tank making it look weird. I was thinking about glueing it on with PVA but I wondered if there was another way that I've not considered?

That's it folks. Just those 2 queries ... I'll be possibly dismantling things this weeked - if I can contain my excitement that long :hyper:

Do Not Use polystyrene with that tank you will void your warranty, to make sure you keep yourself right read the instructions you should have a floating base on that tank. Hope it help

I don't really soak bog wood because I don't mind the tannins, I just give it a good scrub with a bristly brush in the bath. But you can just soak it in a bucket for a few days or so, changing the water when it gets really brown. You'll never get all the tannins out but soaking it for a bit will get the worst of it.

Ps I don't mean I take it IN the bath...!

aw no ... your joking right

Good job I've not put any water in!

No joke, only the old tanks need polystyrene new ones are floating :) should have a No polystyrene symbol on the packing somewhere

I've just checked the instructions (stupid CDRom - what ever happened to writing on paper!) and you are right BBA ... rung my Dad, he's coming back tomorrow to take it out.

Problem solved

Thank you :D

what about the background now? What's the advice on attaching it to the tank?

No problem, I have used just about everything going, special background glue, oil, normal tape etc

Normal tape seems to be the best you just have to take your time if you can do it in 5min it wrong :p

Offer up the background, cut it an inch bigger then need to be more manageable, sticky tape that in place with say 2 bits, trim background to exact size then tape down starting from the top so yu can push in trapped air as you go down :)

okay, that sounds easy enough. I got loads of air bubbles on the last one and it looks rubbish. I don't want to make a rubbish job of this one too :D

Picture time again!

I'm now absolutely exhausted and in a lot of pain so an early bath and bed is in order ... and hope and pray all the fish are okay in the morning. The cory's seem a little bewildered and maybe a little stressed

Looking good! Lights out and bedtime for all, they'll be fine in a day or two.

the guppies and platies are loving it but the cory's neons and oto's seem a little bemused. Anyway, hot bath in calling. Glad you like it. My bogwood is still soaking - when it's had a few days I'll take the sunken ship out and put the bogwood in it's place. Gonna see if I can get some Java fern for it too...

Still a work in progress so I'll post some more pics later :)

Must remember to change my sig pic too at some point

I knew there had to be casualties... lost both my neons in the night. Stress maybe?

It's not such a bad thing. They were fully grown when I got them about 6 months ago. I had 3 to start with but soon decided I didn't want a shoal of 6 as I found them a bit boring. I've left them in there and hoped both died together of old age. I got my wish.
I'm a little concerned about my Oto's. They are searching for food and there is none in a brand new tank - even with all the ornaments going back unwashed. I'm heading out to get them some courgette this morning before they starve.

I was also concerned that my cory's were more than a little stressed when I first got up but I've just lightly fed them all and dropped in some pellets for the cory's and they went straight to them. They'd ignore them if they were stressed I'm guessing so I've stopped worrying.

Water looks okay.
Ph 6.8-7.0
Am 0
Nitrite 0

Didn't test for nitrate as I didn't think it was that important. Water looks a little cloudy/milky. I'll keep an eye on it and hope it clears. I'm reluctant to stress them out again by doing any unnessesary water changes.

My corys disappeared for a few days when I moved them to a new tank but they settle in eventually. The neon death was probably stress. Did you acclimatise all the fish properly like you do when you buy them?

It'll take a while before anything edible starts to build up for the otos. You may have a bit of cycled media but this is essentially a new tank as far as the actual glass etc goes.

Keep testing the water as like I said before you may still have a mini cycle. And don't be surprised if the otos die, they are so picky and easily stressed. If they do die, I don't recommend you get any more. They really benefit from a well aged and established tank with lots of green algae, which you don't have.

I didn't acclimatise ... now I realise I should've done - how dumb of me

In all honesty it never crossed my mind. They'd been in a box of tank water with their heater and filter most of the day. It took a good couple of hours to fill the new tank with gravel, water and decoration - the final stage of moving the media into the Juwel filter and then the fish was a last minute job. I know now that I rushed things a little.

There's now one piece of courgette wedged under a stone (I blanched it first) and one piece in a small bulldog clip suspended from the tank lid on string. I've not seen any fish go to the bit wedged under the stone but I've seen a couple of my oto's on the suspended piece and I've seen a couple of guppies go to it to investigate.
How long can I safely leave it in? I'd prefer my oto's not to die if I can help it but I know how fussy they are. If I do lose them, as you say Soybean, I won't get anymore for a while - I like them but I don't want them to die of hunger.

The cory's are still a tiny bit stressed - sort of coming out for food then going back to lie under a plant or inside the ship decoration (the reason I put it back was for them to hide in)

I'll test the water again in the morning as we're losing light now and I know that can give a false reading. It's still a little milky but I'm guessing that's from the substrate disturbance and will settle once the filter gets going.
