Guess What I Got Today

Have you considered just getting rid of the gravel you have now and getting play sand instead? It's so cheap.

I have considered it but I'd ruled it out for several reasons - the main one being the visable poo! I've looked at a few tanks with sand on here and I don't think I could stand looking at the substrate covered in poo!

The other reason is it's colour. I was going to do a black background, stick with the black gravel so my plants and fish would stand out more - especially the orange platties.

I'm also worried it might block my filter. The filter box on this tank goes right down to within a cm of the tank base. I'll have to put a fairly deep substrate in to keep the plants in place. Wouldn't the bottom of the filter being deep in sand make it suck up the sand and possibly jam it up?

I also now have half a bag of the rough black and white gravel I bought originally - the rest is in the fry tank. I have all this black gravel I bought to replace it ... it feels like a bit of waste to just bag up more gravel and store it.

I am open to suggestion though so go for it ... lol

Sand is easer to clean though... Worth thinking about

Fair enough. I don't think gravel is totally without its merits and if you already have it, I suppose you may as well use it!

I have sand in my tank tho, it doesn't block my juwel internal. You don't need any substrate THAT deep, it just takes up swimming room.

Sufficient filter flow and active corys do keep it stirred over and stops the poo settling just anywhere. It will settle in dead flow spots though.

It is easier to vacuum because it is just there, you can see when it's all gone. I take all my wood and rocks out just to get every scrap (and annoy the fish) but yes, it does look a bit minging before you do it.

A project for the next upgrade maybe!

If you have decent flow via the filter there should be little to no poo left on the surface. Changing from gravel to sand was the best thing i've done with my tank.

oh gawd ... just when I thought I'd made up my mind ....

argos have some in stock in my area ... 15kg bag for £2.99 ... would one bag be enough though?

No no no,carry on as you are. I think your black idea sounds good too, I had all black tank and it does look really effective. I literally only changed to sand because I have so many corys and rams that like to sift it. That smooth gravel will be fine too.

There's also a lot of rinsing involved before you add it to the tank - might be a bit much.

Forget I mentioned it :D

I'd got my head around the black back and floor with the tank lid being black aswell it would - in my mind - kind of fade out and make the fish the feature...

It may be something to change in the future when I fancy a change :)

Good plan. I only mentioned it cos I forgot you already had the other black gravel and thought you were buying more.

thanks Jay but I think I'm going to stick with the original plan :)

You don't need to worry about blocking the bottom of the filter the inlet is at the top.

Oh, that's good to know. The instructions were on a CDRom (which I hate) so I've not really read them properly. Guess I need to sit down and deal with that seen as today's the day to hopefully get some more gravel (depends on the food bill TBH), background etc. Got everythin crossed that I can achieve that much today :D

I'm also calling at the other lfs (dry goods are too expensive there but their fish are great) to see if I can replace my male platy. The male guppies are being real pests with the female platies again

Okay ... it's picture time

Shopping trip one and two gave me gravel, background and a large plastic container to house the fish during the move :)
