Fishyless Cycle Log Take 2

Yes, its typical for the A-Bacs to get very fast at what they do while the N-Bacs are still way behind building up their number for handling the triple amount of NO2 they have to process as compared to the NH3 the A-Bacs have to do. The funny thing is that despite the A-Bacs getting very fast during phases one and two, they sometimes falter in phase 3 and revert back to having trouble clearing 5ppm of ammonia within 12 hours, even though they were indeed doing that earlier on in the fishless cycle!

Thanks for your input WD. It is welcome as always :)
Anyhoo, here is this mornings results.

Just out of curiosity I decided to run a very early test.

16/11/10

1200 hrs

4 hours after dose

Ammonia 0ppm

Going to test every 24 hours from now on. Burning through the test kit a bit quick.

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite off scale
PH 7.8

I added some more bogwood yesterday which may be effecting the PH. Will keep a close eye on it today.

Bought a new external filter today as the old one was making a godawful noise. Transfered the media over so fingers crossed.

If it was making a grinding noise it may just have been air getting into the filter or something stuck in the impeller, both pretty easy to fix.

21/11/10

0830hrs

23.5 hours after dose

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite off scale
PH 8.2 (maybe I just read the last one wrong or had a dirty test tube)

Dosed 5ml ammonia

0900hrs Testing for ammonia again to see if the new filter is working with the old media in it.

Ammonia 1ppm (it should be 3ppm, so the bacteria are still doing there business).

:)

1200hrs Ammonia 0.6ppm :)

22/11/10

0600hrs

22.5 hours after dose

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite Off Scale
PH 8.2
Nitrate no test

Dosed tank after test.

I would say that you are doing fine Aqua Tom.
Your results are showing that you are processing ammonia quite well but that you are still in the nitrite spike phase of your cycle. At this point, the main thing you can do is be patient. The nitrite spike often takes as much as twice as long as the ammonia phase to resolve itself.
