that does look good for a 12year old 
maybe get some gravel, a nice cheap bag from lfs just run of the mill gravel...
sand iam not sure about,but remember to wash it well first, also same with gravel....
really cannot see anthing wrong with it, maybe get some rocks and intergrate them with the plants
my tanks designs are awful but i like them and thats all that matters, if it makes you happy

all my plant are plastic.....i also cant care for real plants
