Bad Betta

You could sell it on after you sort a new tank, that way you could get some money back if the shop won't take it back.

Tell us the largest sturdy surface you have for the betta tank and get a picture of the peco so we can identify it. Remember if the plec will grow too large for any tank you can provide you can re-home it and pit Rufus back in his old tank.

I know I said I wasn't going to post...but...

IF you were wanting to take the Biorb back then you can just tell them it's not fit for purpose. Or...I'm pretty sure you can (within a set amount of time), return it whether they like it or not. But then that may be restricted just to online purchases.

Google 'consumer rights' or 'returning items'. Something like that should point you in the right direction.

And btw, for future reference I am a she. I thought it was clear from my profile pic...but there we go.

I think the largest surface area I have is about 30cm.

I will get a pic tonight after I finish work at my second job hehe.

Well I don't wanna put Rufus back in their as I am scared he may go for my iccle brown frogs and he did try eating my pygmy corys 2 (see I do listen to Curisity) :)

30cm is enough surface area to work with.

I suggest a large 21litre critter keeper with a plastic hood that has the grating effect on it this makes it easier to cut out the little bits at the back so that you can feed your wires through the hood.

A small filter should cost no more than £10 or a sponge filter which would be about £5, you can make your own too but i'm not sure about how to do it.
Again a 25watt heater can be found for about £10 with some hunting or ask the shop to trade your bi-orb for a small heater and filter heaters sell for £15.99 at pets at home i think. Thermometers sell for £1.99.

Add some silk plants and substrate and your set!

Ive worked out the swimming space of a 15l sphere the fish can swim 30.6cm what ever way it wants to in a rectangle 15L tank it can be any number of things 30cm length, 25cm Height and 20cm Width which is just one measurement that could be a rectangle tank so there is more swimming space in a sphere but there is less surface area. so i was orignaly wrong when i said the rectangle would have more swimming space.

formula i used to work that out was

4 ∏ r³ = V
3

That is a fact as i backed it up with evidence.

there is nothing wrong with a UGF L-O-T-T-E if you like your new tank keep it.

I shall not grace tonym with a response as i have already laid that subject to rest.

Lotte you can go with my and many others suggestions or keep the bi-orb, it's up to you as it is your fish but know that we are only trying to help and wish you the best of luck, whatever you decide is up to you.

So my birob has less swimming space than a normal tank?

Hi sorry if u got annoyed with me... but I did set out with the best intentions :)

Well u see I got it cheap as it was a returned one, so it didnt have a box... don't think I can take it back :( I did get a biorb heater for free though  It cost me £37, for my tank, a 50w heater and a live plant... oh and some proper media filer :)

Thats good then aint it??

I want more swimming space than surface don't i?? :)

surface area is not a problem as long as your betta can take air from the surface it will be fine.

I know u are and u are all very kind x x

I may give my biorb a go as I am stuck with it now.... and it has got to be better than the 7 litre naught tank he is in at the mo

U never know he may love it :D

surface area is not a problem as long as your betta can take air from the surface it will be fine.

I have a pump to help with that :)

So basically the more swimming space... not surface space the better?

You forget about tank decorations taking up almost all swimming space in a spherical object but ok.

I've said my peice you know what i think,

BTW Surface are is very important to your fish as it helps the oxygen levels in the water, bettas taking air from the surface is not an attribute that should be exploited.

Surface area is very important to a betta as they actually NEED to breate air not just oxygen from the water.

At the end of the day if you are going to give the biorbe a try then use minimal decor - just a plant and something for him to hide, maybe a cave or tube to displace as little water as possible. Also keep a really close eye on him. Have a look at jennybugs thread about her tanks 'some of which be round' as I think she has modified some to have better filtration etc.

I still reckon it's a bit small but it is your call.

Just for the record....

14l Tom-Pla Plastic Tank = 136.34 metres cubed
15l Biorb = 141.39 metres cubed

That is a MINIMAL difference at best and the Tom Pla plastic tank is 1l smaller.
Also a sphere isn't as good a shape to swim in as the fish will end up going round n round in circles instead of actually being able to explore.

You're trying to say that the comments we make aren't backed up with evidence. Well they are. Years of combined fishkeeping and many hours spent reading. It is also backed up my simple science and common sense. Just because we haven't gone to the effort of copying and pasting every little piece of evidence doesn't mean it isn't there. Just means we have better things to do.

Infact if you work out the volume in metres squared per litre, the biorb has less volume. So there we go. Took me what? 5 mins to prove you wrong.
Square tanks have a greater volume per litre. FACT. Ok TonyM...have I provided enough 'evidence'.

Just because I've only posted 71 comments on TFF dosnt mean im not as well read or not done as much research on fishkeeping so to say that, is just a weak argument. i did say in a earlier post that the differences are marginal but the fact of the matter is that a fish would have more swimming space in a sphere that was the point i was trying to put across. Plus the volume in both tanks is 15L as thats what they hold weather its a rectangle or a sphere.
