from albany, ny USA
California/Texas/New York <<<--- you couldnt have chosen three states in the US that are any more different from each other :shout: by all rights, they could certainly be different countries :) right down to geography, history, accents, lifestyle, weather, laws, etc etc etc.
i think to be fair to the OP instead of getting into this big debate about geography, they just simplified the options.
i also understand the sensitivity tho. gets my goat too. ask anyone from NY! i tell folks im from NY and immediately almost everyone assumes your from the City. and im talking about folks FROM the US. so....
im sure other new yorkers know what im talking about
so lets not get all silly. im sure thats not the purpose of this thread.
cheers

Sure do, loraxchick. There are actually three parts to New York. There's Long Island, the City, and the whole rest of it is called "Upstate." :D

I know what you mean too! I don't live in NYC, yet when I say I'm from New York, apparently in their minds I am.

Dave, Texas wasn't part of the USA until relatively recently - I think that's what he was getting at.
Hodgeheg, yep, I think you're probably in the minority of people who would rather think of the UK as all one "country" rather than separates.
LOL I know the Scots, at least, like to keep their distance (don't they still have a separate government? I know they have a separate repositiry for vital events and censuses).
It's a bit like saying Europe is a country...

But ya know what - on here we're all just one big happy family that loves their fish

And Texas, as well as California are slowly being reclaimed by their original owners: Mexico!

I am from the Netherlands. Notice the plural form; so we are more than 1 country too! Currently based in Oaxaca, Mexico

I am from Hull, East Yorkshire, England UK!! I have 2 very good LFS within 15 mins walking distance, one is (un)fortunately on my route home from uni!! They are both good and know what they are talking about, although one doesnt have a massive choice but is v cheap, and although is a small selection, everytime I go in, there is always something different! The other caters for all types of fish keeper...there is also 2 p@h in the vicinity but for my own reasons choose not to shoo there....

JustKia, in answer to your question after FloydsMums comment, there is no other Leamington Spa - especially not in Yorkshire :p

and just to be facetious re that particular comment, it is referred to as Gods Country, however is still a county :p

In all honesty, most if not all people that live north of the thru-way - Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, etc.- consider themselves to be "upstaters". They don't view the folks that are within an hour of the city to be really upstate. I guess it depends on your location and weather or not you like being that close to the city and not wanting to be considered part of it. I think everyone knows that in NY state, there is the city and then everything else.

On another note, if you think it's bad in NY, try convincing people in Carolina that you lived 60 miles from Canada and that it would only take 2 more hours to get to NYC from where I am now as opposed to where I grew up. They truelly believe the whole state IS NYC!!!!!! lol

am originally from Chester uk, but am living out in limburg, belgium :)
