Well, it used to be a cow town. Now it just smells like one.

I generally don't bother with introductions whenever I join a new forum. The thinking being that the membership will figure me out once I've got a few posts under my belt.
A recent online experience has given me a different point of view though, so I thought I'd better warn ya'll.

I'm one of those types that wakes up in a good mood every day. I can look past the rotten in the world and make jokes about it. (Unless my coffee maker breaks down, like it did this morning. I'm a little prickly right atm.)
I'm easily amused and find a lot of things funny that some people wouldn't.
And I like to spread that around. :)
We could all use a little more humor, don't ya think?
Nothing off color of course, and while I generally cuss like a sailor (comes with the territory, having spent time as an actual sailor) I know there's people here who don't appreciate that sort of language. Or youngsters that really shouldn't be hearing it.
If something slips out that offends you, pm me about it before you report me. Chances are the mods have seen it anyway and have already given me the smackdown, but I'd like the opportunity to apologize directly and learn from you directly what you found offensive, so I don't make the same mistake in the future.
I don't foresee this happening. I've lurked here long enough to get a general feel and you seem like a pretty laid-back bunch. I'm registered at several forums under the same screen name, so you may already be familiar with my particular style, but I'm finding myself with less free time these days so I wanted to limit my attention to one forum and get a fresh start at the same time. Hopefully making this my "forever" home.

Now that that's out of the way....

I've kept fish for a loooooong time. I can't say I've tried 'em all, but I'd sure like to! I've gone through multiple tank syndrome, tried all the gadgets, kept ponds and tubs, went off the saltwater deep end, and talked all my friends into keeping fish too-and melted the ears off the ones who wouldn't by incessantly talking about it. BUT I am far from an expert. It seems the older I get, the less I know! I'll try to help where I can but mostly you'll just see me making irreverent comments or trying to be encouraging.

The one area I can't seem to get a handle on are live freshwater plants. I tried many years ago and it was a complete failure. Of course this was before the internet and before aqua scaping became a thing. I'm perfectly fine with plastic plants but now that I'm down to one tank, (well, ok, 4 actually. MTS strikes again!) I want to give it a serious effort. So the plants section is where you'll get bombarded by my dumb questions.

One last thing. (Sorry this is so long!) I'm always curious about people's avatars but you rarely see anyone explain them. So here's the skinny on mine..
That's Scaramanga, Scari for short. Sold as a "gold dragon" and the most expensive betta I've ever kept, and also the one with the worst disposition. He is seriously cranky and let's me know it every chance he gets. I love him to death.

Welcome to the forum where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.
And the wisdom is incomparable. The wit ain't bad either.

As for my avatar, that is a photo of William T. Innes, (1874-1969), author, photographer, publisher, printer and father of the aquarium hobby in America.

Welcome to you. And Scaramanga too.

Welcome.to the forum.
I just want to point out that in addition to all the wonderful fish related information, there is also a current thread on this NFL season and we are lacking a Dallas Cowboys Delegation. So if you ever feel like you need to vent some frustration at Jerry, there is a place here. Plus the rest of us get to point and laugh. :p:p

Thanks all! Being exceedingly good looking myself it looks like I'll fit right in. I'm more than willing to make fun of the Cowboys too but it'll be between rants about the Donkeys.
@Innesfan, thank you for that. I'd have never guessed, and googles "figure things out gadget" generally can't even get in the ballpark most of the time.

@Innesfan, thank you for that. I'd have never guessed,

The Neon Tetra, Paracheirodon innesi, is named after him, as are several other fish and aquatic plant species. And his book, Exotic Aquarium Fishes, first published in 1935, ran through 19 editions and has long been nicknamed "The Aquarium Bible."

I definitely need to track that down! This fat bugger has been my go-to, but it came out almost 30 years after Innes's book and it'd be interesting to compare the two.

I really don't like the Axelrod book. To me, check the first three volumes of the Baensch Atlas series, and check Innes for the fun of it - the man loved fishkeeping and it's a great read even if a lot of water has been changed since he wrote it.

Welcome to TFF....

I'm actually quite used to foul language. It was the same when I was in the Air Force. And it was the same when I worked for an installation company. Guys among themselves...
But of course, this is a family friendly forum. So, we try to avoid such language for sure... :)

Thanks Emeraldking. I was pretty foul-mouthed before ever joining the Navy but I learned words there I had never heard before!
What's weird is, the first time I heard a woman cuss like the guys it blew me away. Didn't expect that, and for some reason it didn't sit well with me. (this was after I got out)
Nowadays you get the F word on television so I suppose it's normal.

Naturally I can't help ribbing you.....but unfortunately all the A.F. jokes I know are dirty. This is the only clean one I can remember:
Did you hear about the bad accident at the Air Force base?

A jeep ran over a bag of popcorn and killed two kernels.

check the first three volumes of the Baensch Atlas series,
I've got 2 and 4, plus the marine atlas, which is another fatty. They're very good and must-reads for sure. I know where everything is in the Axelrod book so I think that's why I grab it first.
