What are you doing today?

I ordered a pound can of brine shrimp eggs today . Never have ordered a pound can before but I have so many fry I need it . I’m using two hatchers and running them every day . This is a far cry from when I was a kid buying those little tubes of brine shrimp eggs . My gardneri go through BBS like crazy . It’s a good thing I like doing this or it’d be a chore .
Can you recommend a kit for raising BBS? Can I raise them in my basement where the temperature ranges from 64-68F?

You need a 40 watt incandestant bulb to put over the hatchery to raise the temp.

I'll let @GaryE recommend a contraption.

Just taken my 4 year old grandson and her 10 week old puppy back to my daughters. Now to look at the water testing stuff that has just been delivered.

Well personally i would spend more time with the puppy and put water testing on the back burner.

I thought you are a cat person!

www.brineshrimpdirect.com sells hatchers . I have a San Francisco Bay Brand one that you use with a 2 liter pop bottle and I also got BSD’s Hatcher which I really like . Ideally you will need a light source to encourage the eggs to hatch better , you can see mine in my picture , and just put a 60 or 75 watt incandescent bulb in it . That will generate some heat for you . They take longer to hatch at lower temperatures is all .

Is it true that you also need a light source directed at the output spout which the shrimp swim towards?

Yes but you also need to raise the temp 10 degrees...

Thanks. Any recommendations for a particular brand of egg?
I just buy shrimpdirect they have a reputation that is quite good; great folks if you take the time to chat with them and i never had a major complaint.

Anyway the pound your purchase should last a few decades.

Do you use aquarium salt or uniodinized table salt?

uniodinized tablet salt - really who in their right mind would use aquarium salt ?

Kosher salt, pickling salt any uniodized salt will do. When I got surprised by a spawn years ago, road salt worked.

I don't use a light or heat - never have. In winter though, it can take 48 hours. I hatch the cysts beside a window.

I used brine shrimp direct when I bought US eggs. Get the medium good stuff, not the cheap. Since the US source dried up in my market, I've used Chinese cysts. They have a far higher hatch for the price. But if I were in the US, I'd use BSD. They're fair.

You can use a light to attract the BBS to the outlet where you collect them . They’re phototropic I think is the word , attracted to light . Buy your eggs from Brine Shrimp Direct . I buy the premium grade for a better hatch and fewer egg shells which you never completely eliminate at collecting time . The extra cost is minimal . I use Morton’s Pickling and Canning Salt . It’s non-iodized and very finely ground so it dissolves fast . It’s cheap too . When you buy from BSD they provide very detailed instructions about hatching and egg storage and usage . Their website has a lot of useful information too . These people know as much as there is to know about brine shrimp . Maybe more . Buy yourself a brine shrimp sieve or net while you’re at it . Very useful things to have and make collecting easier . If you have questions call them up . They’re happy to answer .
