What are you doing today?

We’re having an unusual cool morning which is nice but I want it HOT . Wednesday August 5th marks the midpoint of summer and I don’t want to waste it being cool and comfortable . The only thing I don’t like about summer is the direction that the moon rises and sets this time of year . The full moon is this week and it comes up late and sets too far to the south to enjoy . I like fall and winter moon watching more .

You'd enjoy moon watching here, as it comes up over the Bay of Fundy. On clear nights it reflects across the water and is quite beautiful. And very often, it has a reddish hue thanks to nature's own oil refinery being just out of sight on a peninsula that juts out. We don't even need forest fires to get a red moon at some angles. We have lovely sunrises that are meaningless as weather clues to sailors unless they work on the tankers, in which case that distant air pollution tells them they're still employed.

The prevailing wind carries the pollution away from me, out to sea, but it's there.

Sitting at work, watching patients come in as tornado sirens are going off, the sky is black and emergency warning are screaming on the phone warning everyone of severe thunderstorms and baseball size hail and to stay away from windows.
Midwesterners will only panic if the cyclone is on them.
Only here till 1:30 today and was going to get some gas, but not if the weather stays like this.
Oh wait, I can see clouds moving vs a mass of black in the sky...maybe refueling is possible

Having sold off all the A. cacatuoides juveniles and their parents, I have a free black water tank for a pair of P. taeniatus coming in tomorrow morning. My dabbling with tank-raised cockatoos is over. Only wild caught going forward.

Which catch location ? If wetspot the only true ones are nigerian red tank raised. The others while called taeniatus are actually kribensis.

Today I am trying to remember which tank is due a WC first..

Dont you keep a written record showing when you do water changes and filter cleaning. I do.
Never ever. If i can't remember it ain't worth doing. And what is filter cleaning? The last time i cleaned my fx6 was 3 years ago.

Your filter must be totally gunked up. Time to do a teardown. I clean my HOB filter every 6 weeks and the filter floss is totally clogged with black gunky sludge. And the sponge is also clogged too. Granted an fx6 should get by with longer cleaning intervals but 3 years-ouch.

Nothing wrong with a little gunk as long as there is good flow; i have some plants in front of the outlet i use to test the flow ;)

I ordered a pound can of brine shrimp eggs today . Never have ordered a pound can before but I have so many fry I need it . I’m using two hatchers and running them every day . This is a far cry from when I was a kid buying those little tubes of brine shrimp eggs . My gardneri go through BBS like crazy . It’s a good thing I like doing this or it’d be a chore .

I've never done live food cultures before. Perhaps this is a sign to start one!

I ordered a can a couple of years ago from shrimp direct; but i waited for winter so they would be shipped when it was nice and cold.

Yes , I am concerned about that but I’ve ordered the smaller containers in summer before and it worked out fine . BSD ships them FedEx 2 day and I figure the big can will be less affected by the heat than the little ones .

At some point you will , of necessity , have to . Every aquarist should have the gear and knowledge to hatch out BBS at the very least . It’s an essential skill in this hobby . I wish I had a nickel for every post I’ve read here on The Great TFF Forum lamenting having nothing to feed newly discovered fry . A guy should not be caught unprepared . It’s fun , the fish like it and it’s necessary if you want to raise fry .
