What's new

What are you doing today?

I'm thankful for smaller businesses in this hobby today. Been on the search for a specific type of hardscape for 2 months now. Some local stores and well-known online sellers here do have it. But the price makes me want to cry, and most online listings mean you can't see what you're getting. I know the cost of this hobby is growing out of control, and these places have to make profits, but a 40cm piece of wood should not cost me £50.. Thankfully, after scouring eBay in the early hours last night, I found a vivarium and terrarium seller who had what I wanted for just over half the price elsewhere :yahoo:

Having a problem with a lady in my apartments; not a personal problem but deals with rules. Here it is against the law to feed wildlife and, also against our lease, yet she refuses to quit feeding. I'm sure part of the no feed law is due to a nature reserve running through Sheridan, but it is still a law, and she is also in violation of her lease and will likely be eventually evicted. The sad part is she truly believes that she is doing good, but she is actually doing harm. One of the feeding issues is that she feeds bread. Most bread has gluten, which studies tend to show causes wing bone formation issues and the inability of the duck to ever be able to fly. This mostly deals with young birds, but it is still not a good thing for adults.

I had the honor of directing my adult beginning band in their culminating concert tonight. It was a 12 week course, meeting once a week. I'm really proud of them--they came an amazingly long way in just 12 rehearsals, and it was inspiring seeing many of them overcome doubts and struggles to get this far.

Then, a proper post-concert celebration.

@WhistlingBadger I didn't realize it was a metal band til I looked at the photos.

That is a cool project, and a gift to your community..
They're begging me to keep it going with an "intermediate" band in the fall. So I suspect we'll be back...

Got my fish shipment. All the fish are fine, and look very healthy. I have 10 Iriatherina werneri, a wishlist fish. 6 each of Hoplisoma melini, CW027 and Gastrodermus cf elegans C 123. Plus I have 10 more Nannostomus marginatus, to give me a good sized group of these beautiful fish.

I seem to have been given extra threadfin rainbows, which was kind of the seller. I have both sexes, and none of them are emaciated as I've come to expect from pet store ones. I've seen them a few times, but been afraid to buy them as they looked beyond the point of no return. These ones look robust. Any online purchase works on trust, and I directly asked the seller if they looked good, with a description of what I had seen elsewhere. He responded point by point, and looking at the fish, he was dead honest. I've been to his store, ordered from him before, and he knows I've sent other local aquarists looking to buy species not available locally to him, so we have a decent working relationship.

Networking is invaluable.

After my Discus days, I put all my floating Surf2 Algae Scrubbers away for some reason. I recently decided to go ahead on my 75g and make a 4g mini sump to float the scrubber and hold more Biohome. Small pump (95 gph) in tank…to container w floating scrubber…the out the sump hose back to tank. Don’t need fast water movement for this. Just figured why not. It worked great on nitrates then as I grew handfuls of algae. The other day I emptied my big floating scrubber in the basement koi pond and thought…..duh, use them w the tropical fish too. We’ll see how it goes.

After watching a baseball game I've, pretty much, just been browsing news articles browsing thing that catch my attention.

One that caught my eye is that it seems that James Cameron, the Avatar franchise and Disney are in trouble again. First time was with the original Avatar movie where there was a suite filed, for copyright infringement by the makers of a 1980's animated film called Fern Gully. While they lost the suite, in my opinion, they were right and it IS a copy of Fern Gully except for the much better graphics and sci-fi aspect. Now actress, Q’orianka Kilcher, has filed suite for her likeness being used to create the Avatar character, Neytiri, without her permission or compensation. I doubt that she has a chance of winning the suite but I can understand her complaint if the following article is accurate.

Sitting at work, waiting for the last patient to be called in, seen and leave so I can get out of here.
Thankfully I have tomorrow off and will be setting up a small brute of saltwater tonight to move the 38 gallon from our family room to the basement tomorrow. It will be...an adventure (or nightmare).

Just rinsed and baked my extra Biohome in the oven at 225 degrees for an hour from years ago just in case. I am also soaking my sump sock in a cleansing solution in water for the night. My 4g sump is running atm with just water to see that all is tight and leak free. In the next few days I’ll put in the sock w Biohome, then float the Algae Scrubber. I will post pics later on.

Collected eggs from my Benin bitentiatum killies - the first eggs from the BDEL 26-3 population. I wouldn't have expected fish
this young to be this fertile, but the eggs look good. The male's fins are maybe 25% developed. I wouldn't even take his picture yet, but. This means both new populations are now producing eggs. I brought back six fish types from four species, and all have young now. My Epiplatys bifasciatus need work, as I've only had one or two fry from each colour type, but they are moving to adulthood, slowly and steadily.

We had rain overnight, but the sun's come up in a clear sky, and the trees, which are still bare and just have new buds, are shining. It's an absolutely beautiful scene - almost as good as today's Sumatran coffee. I'm taking the snow tires off the car today. I have the start of Daphnia pulex outside, and the birds are singing. It must be Spring.
