What's new

What are you doing today?

For the next short while I'll be a complete Canadian stereotype as the hockey play-offs have arrived, and for the first time in 20 years, my favourite team is good. I'm not normally a religious person, but the Montreal Canadiens are a church worth going to. They could be eliminated from the playoffs tournament quickly - who knows. This will be a vice of mine for the next couple of weeks - maybe the next few weeks if all goes well.

I've had a brainstorm to improve my fishroom, so I'll work on that ventilation idea today. This retired guy's life of leisure is good stuff - I just wish I was the body of a 25 year old while I was doing this. I've got to drive a couple of spikes into the finally thawed ground to rebuild the deer fence on the garden. The deer got in through my carelessness with the gate last autumn when the harvest was done, but they did a lot of damage, and then a gale took the fence down. That's what I get for doing it cheaply, so I'll go swing a sledge and get it right. Then, weeding.

I gave a talk at the fish club last night while was recovering from a sinus problem, and this morning, my voice is a raspy whisper. Laryngitis. It's a good day for my wife, and I hope to quietly get a lot of work done.

Finally got a new rod and reel combo for bass and red drum fishing. It's so nice. Full spool of fluorocarbon as well

I'm just curious. ;) Why a specific bass rig? While small mouth I've caught bass with a bay cast, spin cast and open face rig without seeing much, if any, difference in results. I always thought it more important to see the surroundings, as in what are they normally feeding on, and try to match the lure/bait to match.

I can see the flexibility of the rod making a difference to help prevent the bass from throwing the hook but can't really see what difference the reel would make. I can see a difference in the reel as to accuracy of placing the bait but not much else.

Not in any way putting down your rig as any excuse is valid. ;) Just curious.

@jaylach If you have to ask WHY a specific bass rig then you don’t know the mind of a fisherman . Golfers , fishermen , cyclists , ice climbers and many others are gear junkies that just have to add to the collection . Aquarium fish keepers are no different huh @GaryE ?

Beautiful combo! I'm gonna try fishing again this summer after a number of failed attempts last year. I'm on the hunt for roach and chub this time, rather than perch and pike, since they decided not to show last year
Good luck, man! And hey, never know, the perch and pike might be out again where you are. They could have just been a bit slower last year.

So if you know golfing, there's different clubs for various reasons. You have a drive for long hits all the way down to the putting club for usually short, accurate hits. And even within those there are more variations for different situations.
This rod will specifically be for high sensitivity, long casting/flipping/pitching situations for jigs, Texas rigs, or hopping a chatterbait in moderate cover. I can use some under those categories for red drum, which will definitely come handy here down by the coast.

The reel is just to add to the overall look and feel of the rod. This reel is extremely smooth. But it's also made out of magnesium and can transmit vibrations better, increasing sensitivity. I'm actually wishing I got a reel speed up (8.1). It'll work though.
And while magnesium is not salt safe, this reel has been coated in something that is resistant to corrosion. Which is perfect. I won't be using it in heavy-salt conditions. Just brackish at most.
Man, I thought my upgrade to Tatula XT + Shimano SLX XT was expensive. Yours is on another level. Solid setup. Noice.
Haha. Yeah, I saved up quite a bit for this.
But you can't knock that setup! I have an XT spinning rod paired with a BG and it's sweet. I use it for all kinds of things. Just sensitive enough for what I use it for

Haha. Yup!!

I went to the gym, so that means I can eat like a hog. That's how it works, right? I have 2 fat ribeye steaks and 2 baked potatoes teed up for dinner tonight. Yum.

Connor, I don't know what that fish said to you, but you look like you're going to punch it in the nose. Fish nowadays - so rude.

It was giving me attitude. Something about spoiling his families breakfast.

Ugh, I'm tired! I'm getting ready for a 2 week vacation to visit family, both sides. Husband's 50th HS reunion. Laundry done; tanks, water changes & filters ✅Fish sitter instructed. Eating up veggies; composting any that won't keep.

Hopefully packing & picking Meyer lemons to bring is almost everything. That & getting up at 3am Tues. to get to the airport for an early flight. I think once we get there it'll fun & worth all the bother 🤞
