What are you doing today?

Today, I'm not going to watch the Olympics, but that's been the pattern for the past couple of weeks. They have to end soon!

I have a lot of fishroom work to do. This time in 2 weeks, I'll be well into fish collecting in West Africa, and that means it's the rush to have the tanks ready for my return. The last time, every species but one made it back, and I had to tank them while totally exhausted and a bit unprepared. I hadn't expected that much success.

This time, I have experience and while anything can happen, I'll plan for the best and have a lot of space ready to go. The tanks will be on their own for 2 weeks. Certainly, the fishless tanks will lose some of their cycle, but the new fish won't be added in great numbers. I'm only targeting one shoaler, and they'll be divided up over 2 tanks if I get them. I'll assemble any larger groups after they've acclimated and started eating. Most likely, I'll only be able to bring back half a dozen individuals, so I'll be breeding them quickly.

I have a journal at the ready, and I'll record and describe biotopes to share them here. But that's not for another 10 days from now.

I've brought a few old pendant lights back into action. I'm suspending them from the ceiling of the room with growlight led bulbs in them, and removing the strip lights. Half the tank is vividly lit, and that's where the plants are. The other half is wood and rock with low light plants like Anubias. I noticed that small African fish live in the shadows off the edge of the sunlight, if the canopy allows any sun through. So to acclimate these fish, and to watch more natural behaviour after they settle in, I'm trying to have lighting zones even in 20 gallon tanks. It's a change from the usual light across the whole width of the aquarium I've usually aimed for. I'm hoping I get fish to try it with...

If they were the real deal my CC would get pulled so fast it'd have scorch marks. And roughly 5 minutes after delivery I'd have perforated palms.
Totally worth it.
There is a company that does metal ones. But I forget what it was thst made me not get one. They are still dull blades though as I think it's illegal to actually make and sell these with real sharp blades

There is a company in France that makes counter strike knives which I’ve always wanted. I’m pretty sure UK customs now doesn’t allow them in ☹️

This storm went from a dusting to a full on blizzard in 3 days. We've haven't had a blizzard warning since 2017. Even then, it never actually materialized. Fingers crossed it happens this time. 🥶
