OK....I am sorry, but I feel I have to comment on this thread.....I have read all of the previous posts, most of them made me very sad and some of them made me quite angry.

I have children, I won't deny it. I take them to fish shops they love it. What I see being posted here is just the sort of cliquey "I know how to keep fish, so how dare you want to give it a go" type of attitude that really makes me sad.

I want to spend time with my children, taking them to the fish shop and educating them in the correct way to behave gives me and them great pleasure. Yes, of course they will be excited by what they see, but this is the opportunity for them to learn.

I do not condone bad behaviour of any sort, but really think that some of these posts are verging on the ridiculous.

Whatever happened to politeness. Someone posted "when you tell them to tell their kids to stop tapping on the glass"......err.....politeness would suggest that you ask....asking and educating are good things.......just telling....not so helpful for the future breed of fishkeepers.

And to those that posted about enjoying letting children down and (even if you were joking) to those that just wanted the children "gone" or to stop breathing...........nice attitude........NOT.

I liked to think that this was the Friendliest Fish Forum around.....I have had a re-think tonight certainly.

Yes, parents should control their children, yes LFS employees should help, encourage and educate people, but none of these things are easy all of the time.

Remember your words please in the future when you have children of your own, hopefully you will have matured enough by that time to realise what you have been posting here.

If you haven't.....many years from now you may well find yourself as that unhelpful miserable LFS employee with nothing better to do than show off your knowledge in a supercilious way rather than educating and helping and find yourself being posted about on a forum like this!

I help people the best way possible, some people are more apreciative than others, and when i get a chance to let the people down that aren't apreciative i fdo enjoy it as they deserve it for not asking enought questions about the first species they bought.

I do respect children that are well behaved and stay out the way when cataching fish and are generally good, i also repsect the parents for getting the kids like that.

But for kids that run riot I have no care what so ever for them or the parents for good reason, shops are not a creshe.

ok. I just though of something and i retract all previous comments. Someone should set up a biiiiiiiiiiig shark tank and tell a kid that everytime he taps on the glass he has to hand feed the shark. If he asks what u feed him u tell him

Fingers! :hyper: I know that would get most kids attention. Also it would be real funny if the shark jumpped out on the kid. It would be a pain getting it back in but well worth it in my opinion.

I think i speak for everyone when i say huh? Or maybe i just dont understand wat u are talking about

Everything. Little kids and ignorant parents do NOT belong in pet stores. Period. Do not bring a little kid that will want that five inch Goldfish to 'make friends' with that delicate blue Discus. Do not bring a stupid parent who thinks eighteen Guppies and an Angel can fit in one of those desktop-tanks that I'd keep a single Betta in. No, don't do it, just don't.

I hate going in and having little kids and stupid parents steal the working people away. I sat on the stairs of Safari for twenty minutes to buy my feeder Guppies, everytime I tried to communicate (I say this 'cause the guy was Quebecois and I am not) a stupid little french brat ran by screaming and tore the guy away on a false alarm after the huge display Pleco.

And don't tap on the grass, you annoying little child. You're shocking the fish, you want it to start convulsing and die of a painful fish heart-attack?

Though one thing I will never get rid of; calling Clownfish Nemo-fish. It's been ingrained, I just love Nemo. I had a Platy with a crimped fin that I called my Nemo-fish. Doesn't mean I thought she was a Clown, though.

It's not just a LFS, I hate screaming little kids ANYWHERE. But, in a LFS there's more things to stress, in a wal-mart, if they're not in the fish secton and screaming, it just annoys other people. but, if they are in a place with fish or other animals, they will annoy people and possibly cause lasting damage to the animals, most likely fish.

Okay, the "Nemo! Nemo! Nemo!" I can deal with. Running, shouting, etc., I can deal with those too. What I CANNOT deal with is when I am looking at a fish and trying to decide whether or not I want to purchase it and some little kid scoots RIGHT in front of me to look at the very same fish. *ugh* It drives me crazy.

BTW- A BIG thank you to all of you parents out there who teach your kids manners and how to behave in fish stores! There are some kids who are very polite and I appreciate your efforts very much!!!   :kana: :kana: :kana:

This is very very strange...

I probably spend more time in the lfs than most of you as i work there. yet in the two years ive worked here the worst problems Ive had with kids is the ocasional finger dipped into the goldfish pond. I agree whole heartedly with Ava Banana.

Theres nothing wrong with it. But its still damn annoying having a posse of children and adults staring at one tank, rather than just one person. With the whole posse you have to ask them to move just to see whats in the tank, or whats in the tank next to it. Its damn annoying

how do u know they aint planning to buy a fish from those tanks? and all those people who say that these kids were in their way... a shop is a public place and these kids could be helping their parents to choose fish for the family tank. Stop being so obnoxious.

We should start another thread. What annoys u most about the people who work a t the LFS.

as though THAT hasnt been done to death.

No, don't do it, just don't.

dictionary definitoion of ignorance: "lack of knowledge or education"

what do you mean, little kids do not belong in pet stores? lets ban everyone under the age of 18 from every pet store. what a clever idea.

even if we do get tapping on the glass in the lfs where i work, we dont have any significant rise in fish deaths. Lots of children love to look at the fish and the bunny rabbits. what's wrong with that? are all you whingers against kids having animals or even looking at animals?

---------------------------------
You think thats funny! try telling a fat kid he cant buy a cupcake
You absolutely disgust me. You should be sacked.

Actually, I find that there are more adults who are annoying than children. The kids at the LFS I go to usually just start calling out to their parents to come look at the Nemo-fish or the giant Dory. [They used to have a 10 inch blue tang but they just sold it.. for $350!] That stuff doesn't surprise me, but I was impressed when one of the kids pointed out a teacup stingray as Mr. Ray. Only time I've ever heard it done. :D
Now for the adults, I find that they're more obnoxious than anything. When I went in yesterday with my parents [btw I'm 17 and in university, but my parents were taking me to dinner so we stopped there first, so I'm not an annoying little kid lol] to show my dad a wood tank stand as he's building me one in the new year, there was this man who I absolutely wanted to smack. There is a porcupine puffer in a tank labeled NFS, as this poor puffer is very sick. I have no idea what's wrong with him, but his body's bloated in weird spots [not bulging like a tumor, but bloated], his tail is bent at a 45 degree angle to his spine, and he hangs head towards the sand. Every time I go in I check on this puffer, as I think he's adorable and has the most gorgeous blue eyes I've ever seen. He was doing his usual sick thing, and I slid back the access panel to check and see how much he was out of the water. Last time his back was above the water level, but this time it was almost his entire tail flopping above water. I slid the panel back [I am actually allowed to do this btw.. the LFS likes me and may be giving me a job] and just sat there looking at the puffer. This man, who was behind me looking at tetras, turned around, spotted the puffer, and promptly crouched down next to me. I said "The poor thing's sick, they've been treating him for a while but he's not getting any better." He just looked at me, smiled, and said "I know how to fix that!" He began to bang his fist against the glass directly in front of the puffer's face, saying "Once he puffs up he'll be back to normal again." I just looked at the man like he was crazy, grabbed his hand, and told him to stop. "Do you want to kill him? Banging on the glass = water vibrations = fish brain vibrations = death. The poor thing is sick already, do you have to put him through more?" He told me off and went to go get the manager as I was disrupting his shoping experience. Manager came over, I explained the story, and he simply said to the man, "She's right. Banging on the glass is not good for a fish, and can kill then. Especially if they're sick. If you had continued banging on the glass and the puffer had died as a result, you would be responsible for his death, and you would owe us $80 to replace the puffer." Needless to say the man stormed out muttering about how we were all insane and didn't know what we were talking about, and that he'd never come back again.
I just stood there with the manager for a few minutes looking at the puffer, and I'll never forget what he said..

"Jesus.. and I thought the kids were bad in this place!"

So truth be told, though there are little prats out there that you want to strangle, it's often the adults who are even worse. The kids don't know any better, they have to learn these things as they grow up. Adults should already understand how to behave in a store. When they go into a Wal-Mart or any mall, they don't bang on the glass of the store windows because they like what's hanging in the window..

I said I would shut up, but.....

i went with my kids today and got my dream reef tank.

Myself and the GF's kids were there, thats 4 youngsters as we were looking at possibilities for my new tank. A couple of kids ran in "Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo, Nemo" the parents showed up, eventually and told them to stop shouting and they did for a while. Its the parents.

I have been setting up my reef tank today and explaining to my kids what each step was for, they I am sure will be customers of LFS and are very expert when it comes to our tanks.

just trying to say that some kids are good and some are hell, made a post here thursday that it was the parents, but today saw the first "NEMO" KIDS

Perhaps I should clarify, though being called insane, yes, that does make the 'anger issue' larger. So before I start; shut up. This is a thread about complaining about kids in fish stores, deal with it.

For one thing, there are several kids that are great in pet stores. I'd love to see more kids who genuinely care about the animal they are holding or looking at, and parents who can teach their kid that they shouldn't feed the fish their chips or give that turtle there a noogie. I hate it when you see a kid running about like a Lemur on cocaine, while the parent calmly looks at something else and completely ignores their child, who is wreaking havoc and making people angry. I absolutely abhor small children who have no respect for animals. I'd love to see more parents teaching their kids that fish are animals too and are scared by tapping fingers, and that rabbits don't appreciate their ears being pulled. Sadly, it seems that telling your children not to do something is horrible and will have you hated for the rest of your life, so you'd best keep your mouth shut and let Junior terrorize the puppies.

And PlecoPerson- yes, I know what ignorance means. I know a ton of ignorant people who just don't seem to understand that not working in school now means you won't have a job later, but that's beside the point. I didn't say all kids should be banned; there are irresponsible adults too. I'm saying that if a parent takes his or her kid into a pet store, he or she should be prepared to tell the kid not to yell at the cats or poke his fingers in the fish tanks. If they are going to totally ignore their child and then rant and rave when it's bitten by an overeager puppy, they shouldn't be there. When I was little and if an animal in a pet store bit me, the first thing my dad asked was if I was bugging it. If I was, I was told that it was my fault, not the cashier's or the animal's fault. That's what parents seem to like doing.

Really, I'm complaining about untrained kids. They're like the puppies they're poking; if you don't teach them not to do something, they'll do it, and if you don't try to teach them not to do something, they'll just KEEP doing it.
