Weather

one thing I noticed, with all this cold weather, and our furnace going out, the tanks have really needed topping off, even the covered tanks, with hob filters have been dropping the water level to where they need refilling, every couple days... I'm sure the terrestrial plants don't help, but I would think they may use less water, when the house has been so cold???

It’s the temperature difference that causes the evaporation . That’s all I can figure out . I have one open topped aquarium and it never needs topping off in the summer but it loses two quarts a day in the winter . There must be a science explanation for the phenomenon but I don’t know what it is .

I really don’t want to be that guy , you know , the guy that brings no cheer to the suffering ones but you’ll never believe the weather here in the American West . The forecast is sunny warm and beautiful all week . Today through next weekend is forecast to be in the 60’s with nighttime lows in the high 30’s . Spring has sprang here . I even saw a crocus emerging yesterday. .

Lucky man. Great running weather. We have started our third week of temperatures in the mid teens and lower at night. I’m burning through heating oil. This is turning out to be an expensive winter.

Still weirdly warm around here. I'm not complaining...just hope we get some snow this spring to keep the forest fires under control. Warm winters are pleasant, but they tend to lead to smoky summers and beetle-killed trees.

Edit: @Back in the fold I don't want to be "that guy" either, who has to find the bad in something nice. But with two asthmatic girlies at home, it's on my mind. It will be what it will be; won't stop me from enjoying a nice train run this afternoon. :)

No , no complaints from me either . @gwand mentioned high heating bills and I’m glad to be spared that but I read that although the snowpack numbers look good right now they will be dipping into concerning territory if more snow doesn’t arrive . Billings is wholly and entirely dependent on the Yellowstone River and the river is wholly and entirely fed by mountain snowpack . It’s anybody’s guess what the future holds .

Man, it isn't fair!! Never used to have allergy issues until I moved to Wyoming. With the warm weather we are seeing some green stuff is already coming back to life. I'm already seeing the allergic effects with watery eyes and constant sneezing and/or having to blow my nose. Just not fair!

the cold air is much drier, than warm air...
My house sits around 55% humidity in summer, rising as high as 85% on the sticky hot days. In winter, right now, its at 35%. That pulls moisture of the tanks. I never top up, I water change.
Low 60s around here for the week. That's warm enough to chop wood in my speedo and flip flops.
I don't need a wood stove after reading that, because my eyes, my eyes, they are burning at that image.

We're stable now. It's quite cold, there's snow everywhere and it's February, now acting like Februaries do. It's a brutal month here, and the slow arrival of Spring in March is worse, because you feel like there's no progress. I go to sweltering West Africa in a month, with 85% humidity and 33c averages, then when I return, it'll still be cold and probably snowy for a couple of weeks. Hey, but there's more sun every day, and Spring's coming everybody! Hang in there. The rivers will run free soon!

Still in the high 50’s here in The American West with a prediction of 65 Thursday which will break a record for the day . This abnormally warm winter doesn’t happen often but I like it . Last February was colder and much snowier than usual and this is nicer . When is the northeast U.S. supposed to break free from its frozen state ?
