Weather

Here’s a pic of my backyard fireplace. So far we have about 2 and a half inches. Will post more pics later as the snow piles up. 18 inches to 2 feet is forecasted.

In Manhattan, 8.3" of snow on the ground so far (as of 3PM) with plenty of storm still coming in from the west. Looks like the prediction of 8"-12" will be dead on. Outside temp is currently 12F and it doesn't rise above freezing for 10 days. So whatever falls will be here for a while. LaGuardia is closed but JFK remains open though they have cancelled 900-plus flights. I guess they're staying open for incoming.

Hoping all of you in the ice zone still have power.

5 hours in and the worst is yet to come… about 24 hours more to come. I would estimate we have close to a foot already. They’re saying we could get more than 20 inches total.

The one thing I was dreading was losing power. That often happens in snow like this. But I was prepared for it fish wise. My air pumps have battery backups. And I have portable chargers that I charged up. Those can be used to charge my air pumps. My tanks have sponge filters. So in the event of a power outage, my tanks could still have aeration and filtration. But then there's heat. I have some blankets I could cover the tanks with to try to keep some heat. I haven't fed my fish since Friday. Just in case we lost power. I didn't want them digesting in colder water. I'll feed them after the storm.
Turns out the extra cold temps have one benefit. The snow isn't as wet so it doesn't clump on power lines. So there's less chance of a power outage. Fingers crossed.

I hope everyone and their fish are safe and warm
After a freezing rain/sleet combo all day, precipitation has stopped for the moment. I would say there is a half an inch of ice. Temp is 30 and I hear dripping water in the gutters. Another round of snow on the backside of the circulation, but I think the worst is over.

From Bayside Queens NY now in Miami and that is the ONLY thing I do not miss snow and ice but come Summer the threat of hurricane has become old and considering N.C though no fun moving tanks and birds .

For NYC they are calling for 1-2" per hour from early Sunday AM til early evening, then a lighter rate through Monday. Temp outside currently at 5:30PM is 17F and falling. But I feel far worse for those south of us who will be getting ice.

You know the film, "The Day After Tomorrow"? We can walk to the NY Public library if needed...
Though left NY 10 years ago I recall NYC moves real fast as far as shoveling , removing snow .

Think worse case sanitation might be delayed a week pick up but even that unusual ?

55 degrees in the living room, with a roaring fire in the fireplace, and a 1500 watt electric heater in the room... hovering right around zero, and sunny outside, looks deceiving...
A/C is on here at 77 degrees and outside temp is think mid 70s ( Miami ) but come Summer when temps for MONTHS are in 90s every day and you look over your shoulder for a monster hurricane which insurance and all WILL still destroy your house , you wonder if you made correct choice , lol

I lived in Jacksonville Beach Florida for 16 years. 99 degrees and 99% humidity is like being punched in the face when you go outside.

Yes summers are HOT and last long time , I hit the jackpot as roughly 200 feet behind my house there is a field with big canal and lots of interesting cichlids , etc and snakes even saw a monitor last Summer going after an iguana both went in the water so love the unusual nature but I did not think it out as far as one day odds are a bad hurricane is coming

The city has delivered big time so far with snow removal. We're on the corner of a major avenue and a much less traveled street. The plows have been over both several times today. BTW, your old stomping grounds, Bayside, has reported 14.2" of snow from this storm so far. Manhattan is now up to 10.6" as of 7 PM and I bet another 2" has fallen since then.

We just entered the real storm zone. It snowed all night, but only maybe 5 to 8 cm - a manageable cichlid standing on its tail's worth! But it's now coming from the northeast at a hard angle. The wind is ramping up with the sunrise, and the snow is becoming more intense. A "Nor'easter" sounds more exotic than a snow dump does.
I woke up in the night and had a look out, and now that I'm up too early (5:45) it's kicking into gear. It's supposed to go until tomorrow morning.
After I walk the dog I'll kick a path to the fishroom. It's no use shoveling yet with the wind.

This will be a dull one. You pretty well have to stick to the house in this weather. A plow just passed, which is good. I like a good storm if we don't lose power, but they do make you sit around. It'll be a good day for reading.
