Take your time Trod, Research will save you many problems down the line, arm yourself with as much information as you can, print things out from the computer on that specific topic, keep a little A4 file/binder for such hardcopies (I do).
Your in no rush, are you employing a sump.

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting, untill I unveil the tank on thursday, I really don't know which route to take yet. I will be starting my New journal at the end of the week, and trust me there will be LOTS of questions on there. Just want to see the tank now, beginning to get very excited about it :yahoo: I love the planning, research and list making part

I'll chime in real quick here Seff.

Due to the subtitle of this thread and your self-reported lack of hardware skills, I'd go with the Deltec 500 or 600 hands down. From everything I've read, they're significantly less tempermental than their TMC counterparts and will be much more plug-and-play friendly ;). Also, that AquaC would be similarly nice if the price stays down on the auction. Don't over-bid for it though :)

As for the heaters, get two NEW 200 watters and set them about a degree (F) apart (or 0.5C). Always have redundancy in heaters :). Then moving forward, every 2-3 years I'd take the heater with the higher setting out of the system, sell it, move the lower temp one up temp, and buy a new one for the lower temp. This way you won't ever have older heaters in the system that are at risk for breaking or over-temping. As far as brands go, Visitherm's are good, so are Jager's.

Thanks Ski that is very helpful

Will certainly now be looking for a deltec as everyone has recommended them and yes, will go for two heaters, thanks for the tip about the heating settings, I didn't know that :good:

:fish:

ps would the deltec 500 be big enough for a 300 litre tank?

The MC500 is an Internal Skimmer
Is that what you were wanting or a Hang On type which would take it out of the aquarium like the
Deltec MCE600 Compact External Hang-on.

Thanks Colin for clearing that up - have been off to do a bit more research:

Older versions are noisy unless fitted with the baffler

Impellers would need changing £55

the newer ones have the quieter fittings already installed (appparently red as opposed to blue)

So, what appears a bargain may not be so, could be noisy at worst but also at some point need another £55 spent. Could end up paying out £80/110 and then have to do the rest on top, which in my book is not such a bargain!

So unless I can find a nearly new one for a £100 which is unlikely

AquaC Remoras are great hang-on skimmers but they are kind of expensive. I guess it is worth looking at if you can find a used one on eBay.

I have been offered a brand new deltec mce600 but there is a draw back - it has a European plug on it - now i know that you can buy a plug that fits over the european plug that has a fuse (European are two pins and no fuse) and I also know that if you cut off the plug you could get water in the plug and get electrocuted  and would void the Deltec guarantee :hyper:

I can get this for £120 ish

So, my qustions are:

can you see any problems with putting the special plug over the two pin european plug?

http://www.rapidonline.com/Cables-Connecto...k%20euro%20plug

the other question is an ethical one:

Should I buy a Deltec that has been imported in to this country to avoid the higher prices that Deltec charge here in the UK?

I suppose if I went to Germany on holiday and bought one it would be the same!

(this is not coming from the company that has been importing them but from a private buyer who has changed their plans and bought a bigger tank)

So, what do you think folks?

ps anyone who is interested in this you can read up on UR, they have a couple of threads - I will not link to them though as it is another forum

Buy the Skimmer Seffie.
I used German JBL equipment for my CO2 system for the planted tank (Two prong plug)
I just used a shaver adaptor.
