Sand Vs Gravel

Wow, what a star. Will get the sand, wash it, and renew my tank on moving day - thank you! You mention not having to keep all the water - I thought that it was a good idea to keep as much as I could?

I have four little panda cories and two clown loaches, a big black shark and a plec, so I think they will like the sand.

You can keep has much has you can,i would aim for 50% or more of the water if you dont mind lugging it to new abode, then it'll be like do a large waterchange :)

Your cories etc will love you for the change over and will make they act differently, has they love sifting sand.

My sand came today. 15k is plenty for my 60 l (60cm x 30cm) tank isn't it?

I think I better start soaking it

Fab news,best get washing

Hi

Picking up a 5ft tank saturday, i have previously had a few 3ft and 2ft tanks which i have kept a variety of tropicals in. Have always fancied sand but years ago there was very little info readily available.
Found this site on google whilst looking for sand versus gravel info...
So i am gonna go with the Argos play sand as it seems the way to go!
Keep up the great work and hope to post more when i am up and running as i am sure i will find problems!

Steve

By the slight white marks I get around the water line and if it drips down the tank.....I'm guessing yeah. What test is it I get to find out exactly?

<...>
If you want to quantify and better understand the mineral content of your water you can pick up a combo GH/KH test kit. If you search on my name I probably have some lengthy posts way back there about GH and KH and the those sorts of mineral topics.

Gah. I bet I'm gonna find out it's too hard for half the fish I want!

I thought the filter thing was ok as long as the sand level is about 4 inches below the filter (which mine will be - just).

anyone with sand in their tank, will get sand in their filter. even if the inlet is 4 inches above the substrate. especially when messin around with it. good quality cannisters have a void (in the bottom) which allows it to be contained. all other types need to be "scrupulously" cleaned. impellers may only cost a few quid, to replace, but you have no filter till it is!

When you guys say it'll knacker the impeller.......in how long? I wonder if it would be wise to have a new impeller for when that happens. Mind you, my filter itself wasn't that expensive.

Well, I have sand in my 4ft, and two cats that just love to move the sand around, especially into the filters, which are a Fluval 4+ and an Eheim 2213. The tank has been running for several years and I haven't seen any impellor damage at all, or any sand in the impellor. And nowt in any of my other tanks with sand. If it was a regular occurence, given the number of people who have sand in their tanks, surely you would have hear about it by now?

plenty of threads here, over the years. though it depends on your fish. and how much messing you do.
