Refusal Of The Overstocking Rule.

Personally i think people are reading this as if it is a sensible mature post with a serious question, when it isnt.

You have created post after post after post after post after post after post after post after post after post after post.... asking questions, saying you dont know too much but you desperately want to learn!

And yet you not only ignore peoples advise but you then post complaining because you dont like the answers! If you dont like/dont want to take advise, that your loss but dont start complaining at people that took time to bother advising you...

.....aaaaand theres the brakes.

Everyone comes on this forum to share their knowledge. When asking for advice, be prepared to be told your preconceptions are wrong. Ive had it, as have most of the people on here, including the more learned members.

If you want advice, ask for it. If you want someone to OK a bad decision, its time to find a different forum, as people on here are more than happy to tell you if you're wrong, rather than stand back and watch you kill fish off.

Someone once told me something that has stuck to this day;

"If someone takes the time to give you advice young boy, you bloody well stand there and listen". "You dont have to like it, and they could be the biggest fool for miles around, but if they took the time to give you advice, you take the time to listen, and come to your own conlusion".

Strangely, not only was he right, but he was my granddad, the biggest fool for miles around! :)

Im sorry Snake, but i cant disagree with most of the posts on here.....

+1 to both

You take the advice you are given (for free), you do your own research, then you come to your own conclusions and just get on with it.

Well said Tizer.

James.

I just think the 1 inch per gallon guideline was put out there for beginners who don't have a clue otherwise, much like me when I started. But from there I started doing lots of research and can now come to my own conclusions.

It would be a lovely world if everyone would do all the research they need before starting to keep fish (or dogs or cats, or children for that matter) but it doesn't work that way. You see something that strikes your fancy, bring it home and then figure out how things are supposed to be. Human nature.

That's why it's great to have this forum.

I think another big problem is that size doesnt always matter :p

Some small fish, like zebra danios that were pointed out, need a lot of space, whereas some much bigger fish are very sedentary...

But my issue was with the complaint that the OP not only didnt like the advise they were getting but were willing to complain about it to everyone... including the people giving them advise...

No No NO! I agree with the danios, but my problem is - I never said I dont like the advice on here, Tell me where I said that, I appreciate every ones advice and take it all into consideration.
The reason I make so many posts is because I dont want to make any mistakes and kill my fish, my only problem was is that some people can over exaggerate to much.

This doesn't make sense.

If you ask a question and get a certain answer, how do you know that person is exaggerating? You'd have to know what the 'correct' answer was in the first place to know whether they were exaggerating or not.

Surely if you know the answer to a question you're just looking for the answers you want to hear, in which case, what's the point?

Everyone has their own opinion, and as the sticky topic at the top says, it's up to you whether you listen or don't.

What snake means i think, is people exaggerate when it comes to stocking.

I get what he means and to an extent I can see where he's coming from, but if, say, you genuinely don't know what size tank is best for danios, and people say 4ft, you wouldn't be arguing with them saying it's too much unless you had your own idea of what's suitable in the first place. Obviously opinions will vary as to what's right but if you're just going to say people are wrong and go ahead with your own original ideas regardless, I don't really see the point of asking :)

True, well people can only blaim themselves then if it all goes wrong.

Im sorry if I offended anyone on this forum.

I always believe in less is more with my tanks. Everyone advise overstocking Malawi tanks because of aggression, I have a 55 gallon Malawi tank with 11 mbuna in it that are a mix of zebras and one dominant male blue dolphin. I have had NO untoward aggression, no one hanging out at the filter, no death, no disease, and this tank is 2 years old. I chose my specimens VERY carefully. I have a 100 gallon tank that has 6 black skirts, 3 angels, 2 clowns, 4 rosies, 1 male dwarf gourami, 6 platys, 2 mosquito fish, a Siamese fighter, a Bolivian ram, a plec......and yep that's it. Seems like it would be empty, doesn't it? Not actually. Since everybody has so much space, everybody displays natural behaviour. They dont get stressed, so I dont get a disease. Maintenance is a breeze because the water quality stays good for quite a while. That said, I run heavy-duty filtration on it, too. Just because you under-stock, doesn't mean you can skimp on the important things.

If you are considering over-stocking, then by all means, use your own best personal judgement, but know that it is going to mean more dedication from you on maintaining water quality and nutritional balance for the fish in your tank.

Good Luck Chappo! :good:

Im sorry if I offended anyone on this forum.

Fair play on the apology, however, that's really not what we're looking for buddy.

Were just looking after the fish... Its up to you what you decide to do with what we say, and that's all we're really saying...

It is very unlikely that schooling and social fish are displaying natural behaviour in those numbers. In fact, it could not be possible for the schooling species because their natural behaviour would be to interact with others of their own kind.
