Other Than Fish - What Can I Have ?

I have a tropical aquarium and have fish (obviously) but just wondering what else can i have (sucsessfully) in it? i know you can get snails but can you get other things? like frogs or prawns or shrimps or crabs? will these work with my community tank? i would love to have different creatures in there. as much information as possible please folks!! in my tank there are (or will be) livebearers some tetras (various) a RTBS and some corrys just the usuall you know, i would love crabs? can you get crabs?.

p.s. its about a 50 US gal tank (180litres) roughly.

No crabs are really suitbale for freshwater Community tanks
Smaller Shrimp like ghost, Yamato or cherries will work
Dwarf Clawed Frogs are also ok,

Anything with big Claws is a bad idea for a general community, Crayfish, Crabs and Long arm shrimp would probably eat some of the fish eventually.

Shrimp may be ok, if your set having the shark then i would avoid smaller ones like Cherry shrimp. Anamo would probably be ok as they are a big bigger. If you only keep smaller fish (like all the others) then there are quite a few dwarf shrimp like Cherrys, Tigers and Crystal Red Shrimp you could keep in there.

As a rule if the shrimp will fit in the fishes mouth then it will end up as dinner. This is something to consider when you buy them as they could end up being expensive live food if the fish are too big.


If your looking at frogs of the common species the ones you want are African Dwarf Frogs, these have webbed feet and stay quite small. The ones to avoid are African Clawed Frogs (these can also be Albino unlike the dwarfs) as they get much bigger and will eat fish if they can catch them.

Cool thanks guys - so im basically looking at the bigger shrimps and the african dwarf frogs? Next question would be does anyone know where i can get such creatures? I live near Glasgow in Scotland.

sorry m8 i moved away from the borders a few years ago so dont really no if any of the shops are still there most lfs sell shrimps and frogs though just give them a bell b4 you set off but if they sell them in chester market chances are a proper shop would stock them
