My Guppy Fry Journal

In all honesty-the guppies seemed more stressed when I started turning the temp down they started getting really sluggish but the cories started getting more active. I have a happy medium now, it's not as cool as it was before but it's about 26/27 now. They seem happy enough and my cories are back to normal :)

I know what you mean about the bigger tank....just made my husband buy a 20 g fry tank, so now have a 10 g quarantine/ hospital tank hoping this will keep my community tank healthy. Although saying this I have 3 pregnant guppies which I would normally put in the 10 g to give birth in but have 3 new guppies in there that we bought at the weekend, think if I told my husband we need a birthing tank as well he would have me committed lol. Might just have to use my net but still not an expert on the whole labour thing and as the guppies were pregnant from the store it makes guessing that much harder....who knew fish could be so much worrie? Worth it though.

hahaha! Tell me about it-I always thought fish were easy-get a tank, put the water in, add the fish and hey presto. My was I wrong! It's all chemistry sets and dates and cycles!
I want a bigger tank but limited space :( I want to save a few fry from the cobra female to see how they turn out. I am keeping smudgy and the fry with the lovely red tail and give the rest to pets at home. I might also swap the blonde female for an endler female as I love endlers and he does try to get near the guppy emales but they wont let him and it would be really interesting to see the babies. It's just a thought at the moment. Will see what happens :D

EDIT-I have just noticed my blonde female is missing. I've turned the tank lights off in case this is it. I don't know how long she's not been there but I hope she's not stuck behind he filter!

I have never seen Endlers in any of our lfs... Only seen people on here talking about them. Perhaps I should take a trip to the uk and smuggle them back in..lol.

Lol! You should! How awesome would that be lol!
They are quite rare here too but I noticed my local pets at home with males and females which is unusual as I had never seen a female endler before. I thought endlers were just mated with female guppies but these female endlers are quite small and no colour to them what so ever not even on the tail. Just brown/grey colour. I might get one would be interesting to see the fry.

Not sure Canadian customs and immigration would let me they questioned me for 25 mins on the contents of my container when we first moved here to make sure I did not have any English pants food mud Ect. Think they would send me straight back to England if I tried to bring in fish...lol

Aww :(
Well I have just seen my female. She is going crazy, chasing everything that comes near her. She is just flipping out. I don't know what's gotten into her but I will keep a close eye on her.

Forget smuggling Scales. Smuggling is never worth the potential penalty, at least in my opinion. Fish in good health can be readily imported to Canada from the US. I have even sent microworms, with a full disclosure customs statement, to a person in Canada. The microworms arrived in such good condition that I have since seen her selling new starts from the ones I sent her. Moving fish in the other direction across the US/Canada border is quite another matter. The US requires a "health" inspection that is quite costly and provides only one thing IMO. It makes it difficult to move things into the US, thus protecting US businesses from competition. Don't take that as too cynical. I got that information from a LFS who actually does import fish for resale. The annual license to import fish is quite expensive and the individual inspections required of every shipment are also quite expensive. My LFS source talks about fees in excess of $100 to get a shipment across the border plus added charges if the shipment happens to arrive outside normal inspection business hours. The LFS who gave that lecture at our local fish club used an example of fish they could buy from asia at 39 cents each that actually cost them well over a dollar by the time they arrived at the store. They were talking about shipments of well over 1000 fish in lots of 100 to 300 of each fish. The shipment is what is charged for the inspection so 5 fish and 1000 fish have the same cost at the border for that inspection.

That's really interesting information. I'm not even brave enough to sell snails by post! I am really wary in case they get there DOA.

Todays update is-I have put the blonde female in the trap. She went crazy last night and was still crazy this morning, she has been chasing the babies everywhere and she killed one of the smaller ones  She kept chasing it and nipping it and it just fell to the sand. It was really small :(
she has been chasing the adults and nipping them too, even the cories. I really don't know what's gotten into her. Any ideas?
For everyones safety i've put her in the trap. She seems calm in there just swimming around but she can only be in there for so long, I don't know what else to do. Unless I put the fry in there and let her out-but she still attacks the cories and the other adults. Really stuck on what to do and why she is acting this way :shout:

Its a hard situation when this happens, you to do whats best by all your fish, and it seems re homing her is the best option :(

And pass the problem on to someone else?

I'd be looking for a small tank to keep her in on her own until she calms down. If you have access to Freecycle, you can generally find them and other equipment free, or elsewhere at a low cost.

I found with my guppies that sometimes they'd go through these stages, then get over it eventually. I know that sounds rather vague, but it happened with mine. Hang in there.

Old man i was only joking about smuggling, it has taken 4 years and a lot of pennies for me to live in Canada... And as for the shipping well that I can beleveve. Shipping anything up from the US is an absolute fortune and the same the other way. Not like good old England where you can buy everything you want on line and it arrives at your doorstep the next day.

Oh no, after all you have been through, really do not know what to suggest other than to put her in another tank, my first thought is she one of the pregnant ones, is she just trying to find a safe place to have her fry?

Not really, amongst a larger group of fish she would more than likely calm down,i had a agressive one before and removed her to my large community tank and there was no further bother.

Although, now you have confirmed you must have room, getting a tank of her own would be even better, least that way you can keep her :)

Good luck with her.

This Old Spouse-I am actually mod on Stirling Freecycle group so I am always on the lookout!

Scales9 - Yes it's the female who is very very pregnant! She usually goes amongst the plants.

5teady_2012 - Rehoming isn't an option, she was given to me by my mate who had too many fish in his tanks. She has already given me fry and she is here to stay :) I have been thinking about a small fry tank however since b and m sell them for utter cheapness-£12 for a small tank. Ideal for fry.

After her calming down in the net I let her out and she's been fine for a few hours now  I think maybe the fry were getting in her way or she's feeling fed up due to her pregnancy (I know I was at the end of mine, I had never said so many obscenities in my life  ) I am really hoping she drops soon she looks so uncomfortable and I feel so sorry for her :(
I think they all know as everyone is staying away from her lol.
Will keep you all updated.
