My Guppy Fry Journal

Well this morning I put the lights on and everyone came to the top for food - except my pregnant cobra tail. She seems to be missing. I have searched everywhere for her :( I thought maybe she's in the plants in labour or maybe she's in the cories slate cave. Nowhere to be seen. I have noticed all my snails gathered in one spot and am wondering if she's maybe had complications and the snails are disposing of her. I checked my water stats and ammonia is 0, nitrites are 0 and nitrates are about 30-40. I will do a water change to see if I can find her. I was hoping she maybe had a few fry before she died but I don't see any :(
Oh well. I still have my pregnant female who hasn't dropped yet. I also have another cobra female who has purple on her tail and fins when the light hits it. Just the life cycle I suppose.

On a better note, the first batch of fry are now 4 weeks old today. The little ones are 3 weeks old tomorrow. I am hoping the little ones will colour up too. There is the grey one, the other grey one - smudgy and 2 little blonde ones.

Hopefully she turns up soon! I had a three-line cory on white gravel with no plants and still managed to lose him for two days before seeing him behind a rock. I was worried sick :(

Oh no, hope you find her safe and sound, hopefully she is just playing hide and seek.

I am pleased to say-I found her thank god! I uprooted all the plants as my amazon swords were delivered. I did the gravel vac thinking I would find a dead body but it wasn't until I pushed the filter down a bit to stop it chugging when I saw a tail behind it. I instantly ripped the filter off the wall and there she was! I am so relieved. She must have gotten stuck and because she only has one of her flappy fins she probably couldn't get herself out. I think I will buy a small sponge and stick it behind the filter. She is swimming about and is still pregnant! What a shame but so glad she is alive!

Thanks, I am so glad she is alive!
I came back this morning after another great weekend and saw my blonde female sitting on the sand amongst the plants. I did a water change and bunched the plants closer together and she's been sitting there ever since. She can't get any bigger she will start sinking!
Her fry were 1 month old on friday - they are getting massive and the ones with the red tails are very vibrant :D and the little fry were 3 weeks old yesterday.

I am hoping she drops soon as the other females close and it's her fry I want to save more.

Well still no fry today I have a feeling both females will drop at the same time which is what I don't want! The blonde female has started chasing the fry so maybe she is getting fed up.
I have noticed the biggest 2 fry (about tetra size) are nipping at the smaller ones and chase them away. I will put a little vid up later. I didn't realise how big they had gotten. Little smudgy has a nip out of his tail :/ he's not had the best start, he had a pointy tail when he was born, he is still really small and now he's been nipped poor thing.

Well it will be a week tomorrow that I stopped the salt for the ich and I have to say all is good and well. I have been glued to the tank every day looking for spots and found none. That is one worry off my mind :good:

The pregnant blonde female still hasn't dropped but i'm thinking I may have been mixed up. I am now thinking the female who died is the one whose fry are a month old and i'm thinking this blonde female is the one whose fry are only 3 weeks and if this is the case then she will drop this weekend coming. It probably explains why she still hasn't dropped. Did that make sense? Lol.

As promised I am uploading the video of the squabbling fry  Should be done soon and I will add it on at the end.

Thanks

Ok so here are the fry - look at the size of them now! The bigger ones are 4 weeks old and some are the size of tetras. The younger ones are 3 weeks old and some are still tiny.

Sooo cute. I am so happy for you that all is well. I wish I could say the same :( I am never buying new fish without QT-ing them first.

Goodluck with your next batch! :good:

Oh no what happened?
Thankyou I really didn't think I was going to get rid of the ich I am so happy it's gone. My next batch should be the end of this week and it looks like both females will drop at the same time.

I bought my fish for my new tank and it turned out they had internal parasites, I didn't find out in time and and contaminated my other tanks, they've been dying for a month and a half now, and medications aren't working. It's a depressing story sorry. I was watching your thread while you had ich and it gave my hope for a happy tank soon.

Oh my, that's awful. So sorry to hear that :( I only used salt high temp and gravel. It was so frustrating and I was so close to giving in on many an occasion. I lost so many fry I had 21-21 to begin with and now I am left with 11/12. But they are now healthy and happy and I am so thankful to the support I received from this forum and so grateful they came out the other end. I hope my thread does give you and others hope, and makes them stick to what they are doing don't give up and with everyones support-you will get through :)
The only complaint I have is my plants are still half dead but they are starting to recover. I don't know if I can use the fertiliser with fry.
Good luck with your tanks. Your tank in your signature is stunning. Clean and vibrant. I really hope everything sorts itself out.

Thanks. I am actually latching on to my plants to keep me going, they are doing well so far. I just had some really bad luck. I had just finished my fishless cycle when I bought the fish.

It's sad you lost half of your fry, but you really did so well getting rid of the ich without medication. I was reading this thread the whole time and wishing I had used salt when I had ich before. You were great!

I am with you fish fanatic, we have had the same problem with new fish, bought 3 new guppies at the weekend and they are now in quarantine, never adding new fish to the community again with out it. Too much worry and heartache! Hope your fish get better soon.
NY82: the babies are soo cute, hope all gos well for your next drop.Glad the ich is all gone.

Aww thanks :) I didn't know anything about cycling before I joined-which is probably why I couldn't keep guppies alive for more than a few hours and now I have fry and everything.
I only wanted to go with the salt as it was more natural approach as in no chemicals way. I only did it because I had fry and was worried about how the medicinal treatment would affect them. There's always side effects with everything. I will always use the salt if I have another outbreak.

Thanks. They are so funny to watch. Some are colouring up and some aren't lol. I think I wont be adding more fish to my tank for a long time since I have fry everywhere and on there way! I need a bigger tank
