Live Bacteria

Someone pointed out the other day that I may be guilty of starting information that's not true in that I was passing on something about Biospira being out of business (now I can't even remember if this is true and where the info came from, lol) but that it was not clear that Bactinettes would be out of business.

I -do- know that Dr. Tim's One and Only clearly appears to be the latest formulation by Tim Hovanec, the scientist who's papers many of us have read, who seems to be one of the best sources around about the details of our two species of beneficial autotrophic bacteria and who was involved in the biospira work. He has a logon here but I don't believe has visited in a long time, while hes been starting up his new business that sells the one and only product.

What does concern me more is where have you seen the bactinettes. There were two suppliers by me, however both suppliers no longer carry stock which I am presuming is due to what Waterdrop said where the company stopped producing it.

Regardless of whether what you said is true or not Waterdrop, it is funny that both suppliers by me are no longer selling the product. The one shop has the unit for refridgeration unplugged and sat to one side of the counter with the name turned around to the side. I also know that my local MA were selling it by the barrell load at one point. Suddenly it is not available.

To me there has to be a reason why.

It could be one of two reasons, the company are no longer producing the prouct.

There was a problem with the product that meant stockist are no longer carrying it.

I am a bit annoyed with myself for not having a print cartridge as I really do want to go over those articles and produce some kind of metaanalysis or at least a critique. I think the points that Andy raised a while back were interesting, I also want to look into the reasons they chose the specific bacteria strains they did. Unfortunately with no hard copies in front of me, I cannot highlight and annotate and compare as I would like.

I did read them on the computer but to study them properly in conjunction with the other info I collected I need hard copies. Im a highlighter and annotation girl at heart. Always did it that way when I did my degree, like to be able compare stuff. I found alot of info from the patent registration for bactinettes aswell that also needs printing and reading and comparing with the Hanovec articles. I only used the bactinettes for freshwater and they did perform well for me, as Andy said though the marine bacteria are completely different and I want to find more about the paracoccus.

I really would like to know what happened, there has to be an explanation, they dissappeared off the shelves practically overnight up here.

The reason I looked is that I have recently set up a marine tank. What I intended to do was use some in my hospital tank and add a source of ammonia, seeing if it would cycle at the same rate as my live rock etc. The most obvious observation I can make about the differences in fw/sw bacteria is that sw will obviously withstand salt concentrations whereby the fw bacteria would not in the quantity or to the SG of a reef tank. The fact that salt inhibits the vast majority of bacterial growth in high enough concentrations leads me to question the choices of bacteria that go into bactinettes.

Zeolite is an ion-exchanger, so it adsorbs, not absorbs. In the correct circumstances, it can release its load. For Fresh water zeolite, this is in the presence of salt... Can the bacteria access it if present? TBH, I don't know. I do know from experience that in a non-planted tank application, running Zeolite does appear to at least significantly slow the cycle, to a point where Ammonia is not being processed within a month of the tank running with an Ammonia load.

All the best

I go to a dozen or so Maidenhead Aquatics shops in the area, and I've noticed that they've all started selling JBL's 'live' bacteria product in their fridges - it's possible they've just done a deal with JBL to sell their product instead.
