Ian's Lounge Tank

you can really see the difference in the hc even after just 6 days . out of curiosity how many pots did you use?

What's a good place to buy Seiryu stone Ian? I can only really find ADA Seiryu from TGM and I can't believe the price... it must be cheaper than what they're selling it for!

Hey Josh, i got it from a lad on here, he's got some left. It was a bit of a bargain as well. This is exported by the same peeps in the far east, as the ADA stuff.

Only 6 pots of HC was used, I know it's only a few day since that last pic, but its really taking off now. Will update on Friday. :good:

HC? or the tank in general?

The HC hasn't been touched yet since planting. It probably will get a trim in a few weeks, but i just want to see how it pans out.

The tank is still having daily 25% water changes, it has been missed on a couple of occasions due to work commitments. Things appear to be settling down a bit, so i may take the water changes down to twice weekly next week. :good:

yes i meant the hc . ive read that if it is allowed to get too thick the bottom plants can rot and the carpet can float up . i was just curious as to how frequently/agressively it needed trimming/thinning

how come youre doing daily w/c? does the aquabasis leech ammonia initially like ada aquasoil?

It will need trimming eventually, there is any evidence of any rotting yet, HC is quite a good plant as you can see through to the roots, until it takes hold properly. I used the Knott/Tropica was of planting the HC, to stop the floating...

No it doesn't leech ammonia, but while the plants get established and i'm dosing quite high, then personally i like to do daily water changes for a couple of weeks. A bit like a silent cycle really, even though my filter was part mature. Personally water changes in the beginning of a planted tanks life can give you a bit more room for error. Those algae spores can cause problems, especially at the beginning.

i see that makes sense . i forgot that you had replaced the juwel internal with the aps external . great video thanks for the link . i saw a similar video with the same method of planting hc but it didnt have all the stem plants etc on there. it shew me a mistake i made when i tried a few plants in my discus tank. i was surprised by just how deep into the substrate he was pushing the plants . very useful indeed :good:

the HC is comming on great,
how do you find the hair grass? have you had succes with it in the past Ian?
debating on HC or hairgrass myself

I have used hairgrass without CO2 in the past and it didn't do very well. However i have seen it used in none C02 tanks and its done alright. I do prefer the HC though.

Heres a quick update...

24th HC coverage

some lilaeopsis novae added and Crinums moved out (even though i liked them, they took to much room for such a small leaved plant)

The Hygrophila is doing really well.

Water changes are now down to once every 2 days. Things appear to be coming on nicely. Some Black bumble bee shrimp have also been added.

Looks great.

It looks like you're putting radioactive ferts in with plants like that, although I think its probably your camera

Is hairgrass eleocharis parvula? because if so, I have it in my tank and it just about grows lol. Takes patience though.

Cheers Si, yes the hairgrass is eleocharis parvula, it was the only plants i moved over from the old layout. It does spread well, but need a good trim every now and again. It does take some time to 'take off' though.

I really like that hygro plant, I might have to have a bash with that myself soon.

By the way, what happened to your Honey Gouramis?

Great quality pics, keep the updates coming.

Thanks Jamepsss!

The Gouramis went back to the LFS. I didn't want them nibbling my new plants! I'm just gonna stick with the Cardinals for the moment. I really can't think of anything else to go in the tank.
