For Miss W....

To conclude my post Jonny, I'm not here for an argument, i am merely trying to point out the apparent shortfalls in your method. Please don't take offence as it is not intended. :good:

Fair enough btt, thats the last thing i wanted, waterdrop - loved your post, spot on.

Anyway, back to my previous point, how did you know the cycle was complete when you claim not to remember the test results?
I don't fully understand this question, i have never recorded the results so thats why i don't remember them, I'm not even sure I could give you a rough outline of the results from when i test at the end of the cycle, what can i say - my memory has aways been shocking
How do you know its the end of the cycle if you haven't been testing before that?
I test towards the end of the cycle, usually only 2 or 3 times, usually after 15 days so (with exception to my 11 day), and i don't test 3 times in 3 days, if the results aren't close to been cycled i will leave it two or three days before i test again. I seem to have a feel for this method but at the same time i have never been a thorough tester - its just how i do things. I must say though that the topic seems to have got off the point, if anybody feels like giving this a go then they can test as much or as little as makes them happy, the point is the method itself and i will be sure to satisfy your quearies next time i cycle by doing thorough and regular tests and posting daily - wow that'll be wierd, and expensive

you see the thing is, the only way a cycle can be finished is for ammonia and nitrite to both hold steady at 0 0. Now that's not all that hard to remember, if they were anything else then it wasn't cycled. So I'm also struggling to see how you are saying the tank was cycled but you don't know what the levels were even at the end of the cycle.

Jesus christ! Are you kidding or just been patronising??? you really want to know that at the end of my cycles ammonia and nitrite were both at 0??? You and others asked for results, i said i can't give them because i don't record them and couldn't remember the few that i took - i didn't think that included the most obvious of all!!!

Hang on there, hard to imagine MW begin patronising.

Its just that its so easy in any kind of written communication (and these forums make written communication so fast it almost feels like conversation sometimes but its not really) for too many assumptions to be made I think. All this kind of stuff we're talking about just works better the more simple and clear you are with all the details, each addition of details takes away assumptions and confusion I think. And especially in an explicit beginner forum like this one ("New to the Hobby") it is ideal if all communications be written with the beginner in mind.. with the expectation that beginners will be looking over your shoulder, as it were.

I assume MW is just getting at the fact that its unfortunate that your example lacked the detailed types of logging that we commonly do over here when talking about and comparing various fishless cycles. Especially if trying to compare different techniques, its important to see as much data as possible in as much detail as possible and that would certainly include ammonia and nitrite results, often each day if not twice a day in many of our example cases. Often we're looking at how many hours it takes to drop the ammonia to zero and exactly which day since the beginning we reached certain milestones that we all try to agree on -- again, a lot of this being helpful in communicating with each other as it is in technically having the tank ready.

~~waterdrop~~
btw: I understand its not your fault that your example lacked logging details as you certainly didn't set out at those times to do some sort of example experiment.. you're just telling us from memory of things that have worked for you.. understand that and thats fine as far as I'm concerned.

I realise that waterdrop and i completely agree with what you say. But that comment seemed provocative and thoughtless and incredibly patronising, i posted this topic for constructive criticism with the hope of some good coming out of it, not to be made to feel ridiculed. I have said that i will be re-visiting this post when i have results on my next cycle which i now understand we need for this too go any further, i was naive to think that my opinion alone would matter - i will do a daily log and then hopefully we can benefit from this topic, but until then or until somebody else reports back with test results then it would be nice for this topic to stay alive for beneficial purposes, not to degrade or offend other members. This is me signing out of this topic until i have further results - or until somebody decides to have a dig

no, i got snappy and i apologise. i'm not having a fun time at the moment with some personal stuff and i've had a migraine for the last 4 days, having to still go to work n stuff and not having a fun time.

i just lost my rag a bit, shouldn't have taken it out on you though johnny reading it back that comment was unfair. just blowing off steam but it was inappropriate to do it here so i apologise if i've upset you. :flowers:

edit - thanks for sticking up for me though WD! I'll get back on my pedestal soon enough

 ah well, that makes things easier. This afternoon I thought about another long post on this thing and then just gave it up as too complicated, sigh. Probably everyone's ready to give it a rest and maybe there'll be some more data on another attempt later.

yeah i agree we're just going round in circles, johnny wants us to believe him and lighten up, we want some real stats to back up his experiences. stalemate until we get some numbers posted up or some people doing some tests.

thats a relief  agreed and accepted. I hope your migranes ease up miss W and I will look forward to your views when i get some detailed results, tek care until then.

Jonny.

thankyou jonny, off work now and got a hospital appointment this afternoon to work out what's wrong with me, loosing the vision in one eye which is worrying to say the least! :/

glad we're alright anyway and sorry again for snapping.
