Fishless Cycling Log

Think the jury is still out on where you stand following your big water change. You looked to be going along pretty well from the mature media being in there but I wouldn't want to jump to conclusions, so we just have to keep steadily moving along giving it its 24-hour point recharge of ammonia and faithfully recording all the results each 12 hours. It may turn out that you're past the nitrite spike and getting fairly far along in the overall process.

thanks waterdrop, hopefully the nitrites will stay at zero. Here are the latest results, I am out tonight on the town hence 11 hour results:-

Day24 11 hours after addition of ammonia

NH3 1
NO2 0
NO3 10

Day 27 (12 hours after addition of NH3)

NH3 1.0
NO2 0
NO3 0 (Checked twice)
pH 7.4

Not sure why the nitrate should now drop to 0 after being at 10 for days, I do have plants in the tank and there is a lot of green algae which is probably feeding on the nitrates?

degsod, you had me fooled there thinking you had zero ammonia and 1.0 nitrate at 12 hours and that you had reached your qualifying week, but I had them reversed! but you are still close, just have to keep plugging along...

As always, don't worry much about nitrite(NO3) readings during fishless cycling. The plants will indeed eat some of it sometimes and the test itself will get bounced around by the nitrite(NO2), which is going up and down and which will throw the test off some.
