OK,

So I know it shouldn't happen, but these two have been shacking up down at old bogwood central-the love shack.

They have tried to spawn so many times, but nothing has come of it.

I now have about fifty Jade-eye/Convict babies swimming around! All hells gonna break loose when she starts moving em. Daddy J is the biggest in the tank, and does a great job of smashing up the tank and any passers-by if anyone gets too close.

Wonder what they will look like?

Mad, I know, but they are they close enough to have produced normal fry? Only time will tell I suppose. Pikkies later when I can setup the tripod without the little people around.

Hiya,

I can only try, as I don't intend on upsetting them by pinching the babies. Anybody got any ideas on how long the parents will guard/look after them for?

Many thanks,

sub.

Well now, the results of that pairing should be interesting! I hope some fry survive so we can see how they turn out :)

It's already looking good!

Some look to possibly be albino, but a few are getting very dark already. Don't know what to do! I have just sold my fry tank and all its bits & pieces

The parents are doing a good job of looking after the fry, but more than half are now gone. Do I intervene?

I really do prefer to let things go the natural way, but these little guys could be really good looking little critters!

I'm gonna think on it today.

Hum,

Now have about twenty in a breeder. Going out tomorrow to get a new diddy tank & box filter plus heater.

Will stick the box into my tank for two days then set it up properly. These guys are cute. Some have orange eyes, others white, some blue. Colours are v.strange too. Range from white to blue.

Personally,I think you should select one or two for yourself and let the rest serve as food.
After all, what do you plan to do with them once they are grown? We certainly don't need more unpure strains in the lfs.

Congrats

I agree with Blue, keep them to yourself, maybe keep a trio and cull/give the rest away as food.
there are far to many un pure cichlid breeds being sold at the moment and giving these away isnt helping it.

keep us updated

Hey!

Don't start on me you lot!

Did I say I was going to pollute the gene pool here?

I did not make them shack up and spawn did I? You know, I get really hacked off when somebody tries to pre-empt my motives. So, we all sell or pass on hybrids to the LFS do we? Now isn't that a little presumtuous? Did I say'Hey Mr Jade eye, heres a nice Convict, go make babies.....' Now that would be a totally different matter. If I was responsible for it.

I am a little responsible, and, Blueice, what is an unpure strain? Get off my case will you, you're gonna make me PUKE!

For god sake, I have two fish that crossed the line, don't get all moral on me.

Oh, and mum is doing a fantastic job of looking after here crossbreeds, I expect to have at least a dozen full sized mungrels by this time next year. I will then travel to South America and release the lot into the eco-system..............

i never said it was your fault :p

Oh and by the way, i know how hard it is to stop a convict from breeding with something, i could've sworn my old one was trying to breed with my hand once :X

sub.42, I don't think anyone is suggesting that you ended up with hybrids on purpose or that they're expecting you to sell them off to your LFS... they're simply making sure that's not what you have in mind. It's a subject a lot of people feel strongly about, so there's no need to take offence just because a few people want to make absolutely sure their opinions about muddying up the gene pool are known.

The Gene pool is already pretty damn muddy, not to mention the human one.

Too bad you were not close to me, I'd take 6 of them... lol

btw, what does a Jade-eye cichlid look like?

A Jade-eye cichlid is a cichlasoma sajica. I posted a pic of my pair about a week ago in the pics forum, entitled "male sajica has a very small wife". There are some conflicting views in different books about them though, an older book of mine says that the Jade-eye is a cichlasoma spilurum?? :dunno:
