Coconut Caves?

I bought a 59p coconut a few weeks back,with the intentions of covering it with moss and using has a cave.

Now i just need a simple and easy method of opening it up to remove the inners

Also is it safe to put the shell in the tank or will the outer leech anything into the tank?

Any help would be appreciated

Saw it in half, and then scrape out the insides, whenever I used them I sanded the fibres off the outside off.

Hi i used a small hacksaw to cut my coconut worked just fine,and it has been in tank for months now with no problems. Also the inside comes out quite easy if you use a normal food knife. Mick

Like previously said take a hack saw cut it in half and then scoop out the insides. Then i would recommend boiling water and putting the shells of the coconut in it (to get rid of the tannines). And finally drill small holes in the coconut all over with a power drill and try to weave in some java moss and it should hopefully grow over and cover the coconut. good luck

Or buy them from Kresgrave (Ebay). I have 3 and they were really easy (lol)!

I guess I am lazy lol. I go outside and throw them up in the air as high as I can and let them land on the pavement. I prefer the much more natural look of the irregular break. Perfectly sawed in half coconuts don't look natural to me =/. I don't boil. Most fish prefer tannins and are happy to clean anything you missed off the shell.

They're quite handy for fish that likes caves to hide in. I have a couple in my tanks. They're pretty natural looking too. I put them in the tank with all the fibres on rather than sanding them off. Like the idea of the java moss to cover them!

I could have easily bought a coconut shell cave,but thought i would have a go at doing me own

The coconuts that I have put in my tanks I let my dogs dehusk for me (I get them free from my work ) and then I drill a hole in one of the three eyes of the coconut to save the milk, then I usually just give the coconut a good whack with a hammer. The coconut ends up breaking in different shapes and sizes, most of the meat out of the coconut gets taken out and any that wont come out my bristle noses are more than happy to munch on. For a more controlled break in the coconut almost any timber or hacksaw works just fine. Have fun

Well after sawing it part way,i gave up and gave it a crack with the hammer

Luckily it split where i was cutting and now have a curved edge for them to enter without having to make an entry hole

I've had it soaking in hot water to release some of the tannins,i hope to get some moss later,if MA has any
