When I'm walking to work in the morning, I am sometimes passed by a Chevy suv with an engine that sounds like new age music. Not sure of the model; some sort of Subaru outback clone. It's quite nice sounding; I would much rather listen to that than to a normal car. Any ideas what's going on with that?

Bet it sounded something like this.
Its to warn pedestrians. It was an electric car. We've got a lot of these around here. Honda, Chevy and others have come up with their own unique warning sound. I would rather hear an engine any day. Electric vehicles have no souls.

So if @WhistlingBadger stops playing in traffic, he'll stop hearing a warning?

I like that sound way better than a car engine. I can't wait to hear one - it's not a sound I've noticed. It does have a German 1970s synth edge to it, and sounds like it could break out into a Kraftwerk tune at any moment.

I wonder when we'll be able to choose cartones the way we now choose ringtones.

I must admit that I like the sound of a tuned car or muscle car but, in a residential area I think I'd prefer the musical notes. Still I have to wonder if many would realize the musical aspect as an actual warning.
I think its more of an alert than anything. Just so you can hear something. I guess there are a lot of stupid people out there, but there's really nothing you can do to fix stupid. ;-)

You are correct in that you can't fix stupid but you CAN fix ignorance. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge but 'stupid is a refusal to learn.

If you like muscle consider this. When I was a senior in high school a friend built the fastest car I've ever been in. It was a 1967 Cutlass coup with a 1968 455, This thing had a full cam with domed pistons with a high rise manifold. Then there was the trip deuces as to corroborators. Normally trip deuces would have the center carb setup with mechanical linkage with the other two on vacuum at the time called 'tri-power'. Wasn't good enough for him so all three 2-barrels where on mechanical linkage. In actual usage he was using a 6-bore carb. Then there was the switch to kick in the Nitrous oxide (N₂O) injection. :)

That Cutlass build sounds absolutely nuts. I bet that thing screamed.
Actually he built it to beat corvettes. I rode with him fairly often and never saw him lose. He DID have an initial issue with the 3 2-barrels as they could not get enough air to power. At the same time he didn't want o disrupt the hood with a blower. He solved this with fabricating sheet metal ducts that wrapped around the radiator for air intake. Faster he went the more air was forced. It was sort of like a passive blower.

I like the musical sound of THIS engine much better.

I usually play my CDs in the car very loudly. I learned to like loud music in my sound company days in the 70s. Of course rock concerts are not all that quiet and I have attended a few beyond doing the sound.

@connorlindeman Yep, I think that's what I'm hearing. Electric cars with musical noisemakers so people who aren't paying attention can get out of the way. Sigh. It is a rather pleasant sound, though. Your donut spinning video sounds too much like a kid throwing a tantrum. A really loud one.
