At What Point Do You Ask For Help

Yeh but if you go into the surgery and theres a big board of "Read here first" you dont ignore it and take up the dr's time with a cold ;)

This brings us back to the checklist. A simple "Tick the boxes" thing to establish that the fish is unwell. Then you can look at the database to research it further maybe?

If you want to volenteer to make such a system feel free :) if it doesnt work we'll be no worse off.

I don't have the computer knowledge to do it properly, but I can rough draft something for sure. Can you think of another way? I'm not saying my way is THE way

Interesting topic and I would never think of takin a fish to the vet yet I would do it straight away for my dog

Saying that in all the years I have been keeping fish I have only had whitespot which is easy to treat and injuries to fish from others which again I treat with meds and a quiet tank etc

Most fish I have that die just seem to out of the blue and I never have an explanation for it#

Why is it a problem people asking for help?? Surely that is one of the reasons for the creation of forums. To discuss, and share knowledge. :)

Nothing wrong with it at all. What we are talking about here is ways for people to detect that your fish is unwell BEFORE it gets too serious, which some people are doing on the forum. Like an early warning kinda system.
As have been said, lack of experience has shown that aquarists sometimes wait till symptoms are severe before posting on here to discuss

Good water quality and issolate all new fish for up to 4 to 6 weeks.

I agree with the checklist system, you should be able to check off symptoms, and mabye have a little spot where you can write out a brief discription of the fish's condition, click send and it sends off to a few people who have signed up with the check list who have a decent knownledge basis of common or even complex fish disease.

It'd look something like this...

Fish symtoms__________________________________Yes/No
Cloudy eye(s)?
Bloated/ing?
trouble swimming?
staying near bottom of tank?
red, vein like, lines on scale(s)/tail
open sore(s)?
cotten like growth(s)?
lathergic?
missing scales?
Missing appendage (such as eye)?

and whatever other symptoms anyone can think of.

Breif discription of fish(s) condition:

[Send] [] If urgent click box

now it'd send this off to whomever has signed up to help with fish disease problems and (hopfully, assuming the member is diligent checking e-mails) theres a response withing 2-10hours.

That or an automated system so theres no wait time. Aswell we could links that have all of the known diseases, pictures of fish with diseases, backround info on the disease, cure(s) if any and prevention methods.

Not to mention that the differences in time zones may cause a delay and people may not be able to respond in time.

Flicking and rubbing.
Pale or darker in colour.
Gasping.
Excess slime.
Darting.
Looking thin.
Appetite.
Hiding away.
Inflamed anus or enlarged anus.
Scales sticking out.

It's fairly easy to do also.... I'm not sure with forums, but I have created loads of web page contact forms and it would be simple yet effective!

Bravo

Yeah, nice one wilder. Thats brilliant too.

MODS:- Could we maybe have something like this on the fish health, emergencies and newbie sections. I think it might help alot of people and alot of fish.

Nice one Helen
