At What Point Do You Ask For Help

That is a very good idea! As our vet in residence, I nominate emmsy to begin the topic! :good:

Too late im afraid, if you read into the emergencies thread you'll see its already there.

Such As This

Nice idea though :) sure you could add to it.

FABULOUS. So why aren't some people using it then? Can it be advertised on the forum more maybe?

hahaha Vet in residence. I like that Helen

Same reason we see the same questions asked time and time...and time again :) people would rather just ask then have to search for the answer :p Only thing we need to advertise I think is the importance of personal research :) (Sorry sounds like im ranting :p I just feel for the guys who spend agies writing these things only to be overlooked)...

Okay, new thread rule....there is no such thing as ranting on this thread. This is a debate and ALL points are valid.

Is it up to us to direct people to this database?

Hehe, glad im not coming accross as an old grump :p Ya I think it is just important to point people into the right direction :) can take a while to get to grips with this place as theres just so much info around, i can understand how parts are missed :)

Yup thats one idea :) problem again though is the 'New To The Hobby' thread is jam packed with articles about all aspects, most people over look it completly to try and make life easyer :p Lazyness, lucky weve got emmsy to point them in the right direction!

I think that's part of the problem, a newb comes on in blind panic and find it easier to just ask the question instead of trawling through the thousands of topics. All the info contained there can also be v confusing, plus might not exactly fit the question.

Maybe all users should swear an oath......

I solemly swear I will direct all newbs in the direction or tropical emergencies should the need arise.

I don't think we're responsible to point people in the right direction, as what some on here believe to be right others believe to be wrong. For instance, the one inch per gallon rule aswell as feeding live fish. Let's not change the subject by having a debate over feeding live fish or not please.

In all seriousness it's up to a person to research and gather information within there own abilities, granted there may not be 100% accurate information on the web and this site has loads of great information. I believe that we as members of this wonderful site should only suggest based upon our research and experience. I've seen people with tanks that are overstocked and everybody gets on there case. Just because a tank may seem overstocked based upon the mass amount of fish doesn't mean it is, there are many things to consider such as tank size, foot print, water permeters, filtration, maintainance on the tank, feeding, agression levels, swimming levels and of course the maximum size of the fish.

Yes, we should help people who don't bother to search for the answer, but if possible we should have a FAQ section so people may see if there question is in there, type in the question and the system could match it as accuratly as possible.

Extremely good points PRW. Especially "I've seen people with tanks that are overstocked and everybody gets on there case. Just because a tank may seem overstocked based upon the mass amount of fish doesn't mean it is"

As my tutor said Education Education Education...The first one is to educate yourself about diagnosing a problem The second education is to educate how to solve it, and the third education is to learn how to prevent it.

SJ2K It was a bit like that post where you said about the chicken and the egg situation

But if it is for the welfare of fish......

You don't go to a dr's surgery to be told to go away and reasearch it yourself.

Obviously if it's something very common, I can understand, but the majority of threads you read are newbs who have never encountered these problems before. I myself panicked when I had my first bout of whitespot. I didn't know whether it was whitespot or fungus or something else. I got a book from the library which didn't really help me diagnose because I couldn't work out what I was looking at. I asked at my lfs who couldn't really help me either. I just wish I had someone to ask.......

Now not to back track or anything... but back the the vet knowledge we spoke of on page 1, another thought just occured as to why the programs aren't that extensive on exotic pets and as to why some vets don't go back to take a course on them.

Money...

My father told me of his old friend whom was a vet for farm animals (horses, cows, sheeps etc.), well, after about 6 years of working as a farm animal vet he decided to go back, take a course for standard animals (dogs, cats and small animals) and found that the money made being a vet for standard animals was atleast $20,000 more yearly.

The fact is, everybody is greedy in their own way. People love money, we all know it, but it takes a true love of animals (all types) to see past the monetary assests and actually help the animals and the owners.

I think that is true for most professions... the more you study the more you can earn.

"You don't go to a dr's surgery to be told to go away and reasearch it yourself. " very good point Helen
