And So It Begins...

thanks people....

Alas the past couple of days have not been kind to the tank....

While the cycle is going well , alge is sweeping across every surface like a plague....

and my plants arent doing to well.

I have however just added the flintstone stylee cave to the tank and i`m quite pleased with the results, i`m hoping my plec will have fun hiding in there

hi BIGIAN yes the rena is a nice looking tank, it's just that i want a sump that was the only thing that put me of buying 1. are you using just the 1 external or have you added another 1 you might as well with 2 sides to that lovely stand lol. ps do that type of plants like being in sand ? i would have thought you would have needed to bury them a lot lower in some bigger gravel ( not that i know anything about plants )

and ps yes i like yor RENA TOO HELSEKIA TA RA

looking good  love the cave :D

we had an algae problem way back when we cycled ours and we put greenaway in and weve never had a problem since.we added a bristlenose that keeps things in check  little fatty he is

Hi Ian, tank looks great, glad to hear your cycle is progressing.

Which glue did you use for the cave? It'd be handy to know what glue can be used for fixings in an aquarium and is non-toxic once dry?

After your posts the other day I've had success with mine and the ammonia has vanished, I've just upped it again and will start testing for nitrite now....my plants aren't fairing too well with the ammonia, but I suspect its really too soon anyway?

i used aquarium silicone to stick the cave together. dead simple and easy...

some of the plants are dying off, i`m going to start adding ferts this weekend not a full dose but it should just be enough to keep them ticking over till after the cycle....

most of the plants i`ve added are thriving apart from some slight browning that i believe is down to a lack of CO2 in the water, will have to keep an eye on it and possibly get a co2 system installed

And as for the filters i have a fluval 403 that i`m thinking of adding to the system but i`m not sure if this would be serious over filtration.....

wow it's looking really good hun :D can't wait to see it properly with fishes in

I think Polly would like the cave much more than Al tho :* ;)

hey Ian, awsome tank.

lovin the decor and the cave, the plec will love it :D
beware of using aqua silicone on rocks, it tends to unbond slowly, i made a rock cave and in about 6month i went to lift it and it fell apart! would not want it to crack the bottom if it topples :S

looks good tho ;) i built a house for a plec once..... he didnt use it :-(

ne hoo, good luck budd :)

DG

thank ye kindly.

I doubt the cave will be in there in 6 months unless the plec loves it.

i may go for a much more heavily planted tank and make a smaller cave coverd in java moss....

And alas my tank no longer looks like that as alge has taken over...

i`m hoping this is just part of the cycleing process
and will go away when i do a water change and add fish

alge in a cycleing tank....

My tanks on its 3rd week of cycleing and its infested with alge the water is incredibly cloudy i have to clean the alge off the plants and every surface on a daily basis...

Is this normal?
Will it go away after the cycle?
Is there anything i can do to combat it in the mean time?

Would adding more plants to use up more the of the nutrients help?

I need some help

hi ian sorry to hear about your little problem but all i can say to you is just have your lights on for a few hours say from tea time till 10ish, i don't know how long you have been leaving them on for but i bet it's the full 10 hours or so ??? . you have no fish in yet so even if you just use 2 tubes I THINK THE RENA HAS 4 ? . sorry m8 but that's all i can think of to reduce the problem
HOPE IT HELPS TA RA

no this one only has 2 tubes...

i`ve turned the hours down to 6 hours a day and that seems to of helped i also did a 30% water change aswell as adding a nice mature filter from my mates tank to help speed the cycle up.

other than that no major changed to the tank this week but maybe next week if this fikter helps i`ll be adding some fish :D :D :D
I added 5 ppm of amonia last night before i popped this new filter in and its now down to one.. with nitrites at 0.25 and nitrates at 10

yippie :D :D :D
