I came downstairs this morning to find a dead amano shrimp on my kitchen floor

I have a juwel rio 125 and been trying to work out how it got out, then remembered there are 2 gaps at the back of the tank, big enough for an amano to escape (about an inch in height).

Has this been known to happen with Rio tanks? If so, what have people done as a prevention?

Oh no :(

I have similar gaps at the back of my tank and sometimes worry about my Pygmys coz of the speed they swim up for air sometimes.

I'm thinking, maybe cutting a pair of tights up and sticking them over the holes? I have 1 more amano shrimp left, I ain't allowing this one to die!!!

yeah water stats are good, Amanos are notorious for walk-abouts if they get the chance.

It's the same amano that I've had to catch numerous times over the last 6 months  it was the only female in my set up

Nitrate sits between 15-20 but that never bothered them before

I've woken up before to have a living room full of about 10 shrimps that climbed out in the night, turns out my CO2 crashed in the night and they wanted out. Amanos are clever escape artists when they need to be.

I lose a few cherry shrimp a month from suicide jumps...

Its a rimless open topped tank, and I have recently made a small thin plastic rim to keep them in. I think they get nibbled at by a rainbow fish juvenile I am growing out in the tank, and they do a little jump. If they happened to be near the rim, they ended up sailing out over the edge.

The death rate has reduced massively now the rim is in place :) Although, saying that I had my first suicide in a month or so the other day.

I'm hoping my last amano stays put  otherwise it may well become a rat snack, like previous one.............being serious, it crawled into my rat's cage!

I agree with James, Amano, tend to jump it the water isnt great. I have read about them doing this with ph swings more than anything else.

Nothing like what i had monday morning, i had, empasis on the had, a blue lobster. He was a good size about 4inch with alteast 6" feelers. He was in a tank on his own in the kitchen, i woke up monday morning to find him behind the tv in the living room flat on his back. I think my cats had him :p He was alive, but when i put him in the tank he just floated and died.

All my tanks from now on shall have lids :) fed up of having suicidal critters :shout:

ALL of my tanks have secure lids lol. I even told pets at home it was stupid to sell tanks with no lids; the sales guy agreed actually :)
