Amano Suicide!

i'll try that pd, the tights thing ain't working lol

Amanos will go for a walk fullstop, don't matter about water quality

All my tanks from now on shall have lids :) fed up of having suicidal critters :shout:

Hee!!

One of my Kuhlis once launched itself clean out of the tank. I was cleaning the filter on the floor and I heard this 'split splat split splat split splat' and I thought it was water dripping out of the filter, so I shrugged and carried on cleaning.

Imagine my horror when I was just about to move my foot, looked down and saw a stoopid Kuhli split splatting about on the ground sheet!! So not only had the silly thing jumped out the tank, but I nearly stood on it!! I think the exact words I uttered went something along the lines of, "YeeeeeeAAAARK!!!"

The snag is, Kuhlis are slippery little blighters so there was no WAY I could catch it in a net, I had to push it onto a teaspoon with my finger and throw it in the direction of the tank before the (now very grey) daft critter wriggled off!!

It's still alive.

I use Koi Pond Wool cut into squares, ready to use as a cheap alternative to the Juwel white sponges, filling in those two gaps (around the Eheim output pipe).

ohh good idea :good:

I'm hoping my last amano stays put  otherwise it may well become a rat snack, like previous one.............being serious, it crawled into my rat's cage!

I'm sorry but  that's hilarious! :hyper:

I get nervous when my rats are on 'free for-all' time, they sit and stare at the tank. Thing is, rats are intelligent, so if i left that room for a minute, i am sure i'll be saying 'goodbye Vienna' to my fish

I've kept amano shrimp now for at least 3 years, and the only time they have ever decided to go walkabouts was when we had a powercut and the tank temp dropped right down, I've never heard of any leaving their tank without a major change in water parameters.

If they get the chance they will, I left the lid off my 60ltr, forgot to put it back on after a water change and went to mow the lawn. Came back in and 2 of them were scuttling across the kitchen surface

My stats are 0, apart from nitrate (planted) and my temp has not changed. This 1 shrimp has made numerous outbreak attempts over the months, guess she just liked a walk.

I`m with Shred. Apart from a crappy Juwel Lido, all my tanks have been open topped, and the only occasion my Amanos have gone walkies is when I have added too much CO2...then they come flying out of the tank.

With decent water parametrs, Amanos will stay put. Anybody with Amano shrimp climbing out of their tank needs to look at their water parameters. Regardless of what any test kit will tell you, the shrimp aren`t lying.

Dave.

I have the same tank with 6 amanos in, and in over the year that i've had amano's in the tank, not one has ever even attempted to get out... and the holes are not covered. :)

Though, this does make me a bit nervous, perhaps best to cover it?

so if water stats are fine, water changes and the same amano that has always gone walk about, went walk about, something is wrong? No offense but it's not  otherwise the other one would have.

Where i have my filter placed, it pretty high up, it stops just below the gap on the tank, amano climbed out went walkabouts.

Some people have issues with amanos going walkabouts, others don't. I wouldn't worry about it, but i now have the holes covered. If there was a water issue, i'd know about it with the fish.

Just because one member of a species is more tolerant than another doesn`t mean all is fine in your tank, and that it is the fault of the wandering shrimp.

How do you know the water stats are fine? Sorry, but an Amano walking out of a tank in to certain oblivion doesn`t sound like normal behaviour to me.

Amano shrimp are widely used in open topped planted tanks, with very few reports of them leaving in search of a crispy fate.

Dave.

Perhaps they are trying to get back to Japan, Dave. I'm still also insistant that it's was quality.

I really think there are eliments to water quality that we don't know about/have tests for yet. I've thought this before, loads of times people have had spot on water results for the tests we know about yet still fish die/look off colour of seemingly nothing. Nothing dies of nothing.

Im sorry Beth but again Ive got to agree to all the other guys. I cant see why the amano shrimp would want to come out if they were happy. Ive had mine for a year now with no such problems. Maybe its water quality or maybe even security. Have they got loads of hiding places? Mine spend a lot of their time hiding in a cave.

Just something to thinka bout, James
