Platy can get to 2 - 2 1/2 inches long. They are livebearers, so the fry come out swimming. If you leave the fry in the tank, chances are you will only get 1 or 2 out of 30+ that survive. The rest, most likely will get eaten by anything in the tank (even their parents!) If you have another tank that you want to use to grow them out, and you can catch them soon after birth you can, but remember that they eventually could get to be 2 inches, so you need to make sure that you have a proper home to put them in once they are big enough to leave the fry tank.

Ok. You have an empty 10 gallon tank. You could put 1 male platty and 2 female platties in there, along with 2 or 3 bottom feeders - cory cats or shrimp. You need these guys to eat up any un-eaten food so that it doesnt start to rot and get yor fish sick.

once you have followed the good advice given by tokis, you may want to consider White Cloud Mountain Minnows. They stay small, are colourful and are very hardy. There is a golden variety as well so if you can get a mixed group it will look great.

You should be able to keep about 8 in a 10gal I should think.

There is a link to their profile in my sig.

Edit...just seen your other thread about neons - White Clouds are a similar size to neons.

This fish business it tough, I love that line. It can be tough at the beginning, there's a pretty steep learning curve. It's not rocket science though, you'll have a handle on it in no time, especially since you're not afraid to ask questions.

Platys are a good start, most non-chain fish stores will take fry in once they are an inch long. I was getting 50 cents apiece for them when I was doing platys. It pays for fish food.

Feeder fish wil get large, if you are feeding them to the crayfish, replace them with platys as they get eaten. Platys will breed like rabbits, you can feed the occaisonal fry to your crayfish, trade some larger fry in.

theres something about crickets i need to do also

and canoe wanna buy an ice sword from me for 19000 neopoints

ok platys are good but what im tryna say is you have alot of fish in your other tank.feeder goldfish and a crayfish you will need the empty 10gal for them when they get bigger unless your planning on getting another tank :/

they will be teared to shreds before the goldfish actually grow though

Platty will eat pretty much anything you put in front of them.

Flake, bloodworm (freez dried, frozen or live), plantkon, algae discs, peas, cucumber, the freckles off my arm - they try anyway. If you can buy it in a fish store... they will eat it.

Is your water cycled? You shouldnt add any fish until you tank is properly cycled and is safe for fish... despite what the fish store will tell you.

you can't just fill a tank with water and then add the fish in. you need get the water in propber condition before the fish can go in.
