What's new

What are you doing today?

Got out early on the bike today and got in fifty miles . Now I’m tired and got nothing to do but think about what I’m hungry for . Such a dilemma to have 🤣 .
50 miles.........wow. How long does it take to do 50 miles?
I do 10 minutes on my indoor rowing machine and I need to rest.

Everybody says that but it’s easy . I only averaged 15.5 MPH over the whole distance . Took me 3:18:36 today but you go up hills and down hills and sometimes you have a tailwind and you always have the mechanical advantage . The thing I like most about cycling is the rolling buffet . I always carry a banana and a couple sandwiches . Carry water too . Some guys carry a mini thermos of coffee . I’m thinking about that .

Been a LONG time but back in my days I used to do 40-50 miles on a Huffy 10-speed 3-4 times a week.

That was probably a bit heavier bike and I bet you had to work at it ! Riding bikes is fun . I like the fun of it . Every so often you get a downhill or a tailwind where you don’t really do anything but coast along and it’s like flying in a way . Getting out and seeing the sights is fun too .

Actually it didn't seem like much work but then I did leg presses with 530 pounds so had the legs for it. ;)

I was an avid cyclist until being placed on anticoagulants for multiple pulmonary embolisms. I particularly enjoyed century rides.

I always made a point of keeping my mouth closed when there were lots of bugs around. I avoided the rolling buffet.

I admire your fitness for doing that. I cycled a lot for many years, and for good distances, but gradually my knee from injuries in other sports became a problem. I had complications from surgery on it, and when I should have started back up, I got lazy. I keep trying to get started again, but nowadays I live at the bottom of two huge hills, in between them. Somehow, it just isn't a place for building up stamina - I need a good stock of stamina to go anywhere to begin!

So it's an exercise bike moved around in the fishroom for me. I've seen the general region you live in, with the rolling land, and it must be nice to ride there. Nice, but still a level of activity to be respected.

Maybe if I can keep going on the exercise bike all winter (and I have no excuse not to) I'll be able to transition to real bike rides by next Spring. I've only had the stationary bike for a few months.

I just finished eating a soup that my Colombian wife makes. She's from Bogota and they're all about soups (it's chilly there, believe it or not- 10,000 feet in the air). It's super simple, but many great things are: Stew beef, onions, potatoes, cilantro, salt, water. That's it. I add copious amounts of black pepper, but otherwise that's all I need. So good.

With the weather changing and cooler days ahead I’ve been thinking about some different kinds of soup . I like soup . There’s so much you can do . Throw in everything !

I hope to squeeze in a long one before the snow flies . 100 miles would be nice but more than that I want to do 71 miles , my upcoming birthday mileage . I have a feeling that late December is going to be iffy for that so October is more likely .

When I cycled I always looked forward to a once a year century ride that started in Salisbury, Maryland then off to the ocean and then back to Salisbury. Beautiful countryside. Upwards of 3500 cyclists participate but for most, including me, it was a ride and not a race. At the finish line there were food trucks with cold beer and all sorts of food items. Live music too.

3500 guys ! ? ! ? That must honk off the motorists . Imagine trying to pass that horde ! Another disadvantage of being way out in the Outer Mongolia of eastern Montana . We don’t draw the crowds for anything . Well , on second thought , maybe that’s really not such a bad thing .

When I was in the Army a friend and I bought mountain bikes - they were kind of a new thing- had them sent from Colorado to Germany- we took them on a 17 day tour of Southern Germany- we would sleep in fields between towns or in parks in towns. We rode from Wurzburg down the "Romantiche Strasse" down to Rotenburg, then Augsburg, Fussen (near Neuschwanstein), Munich, Regensburg and then back to base (Vilseck). So much fun.

I have a bike and was getting in to riding it and then I got a flat and haven't bothered to fix it. I need to get the dang thing rolling again....

I bet that was fun ! Europe is a whole different scene than America . They really embrace cycling and hiking and things like that and make it more fun by having well maintained trails and a hut system . I’d love to go there but I don’t think I ever will .
Get that flat fixed and , in the words of Freddy Mercury , “ Get on your bikes and ride ! “

what do you use as a base...chicken stock? beef stock? or no stock?
